Grandfather Charles H.F.Noehren born 1862 in Schleswig-Holstein.Came to United States in 1886. I am Passport from Germany and what Port in Germany he sailed from to the US in 1886.Any help would be greatly appreciated. William L.Noehren
I was lucky that I found two different ancestors on the Ships Passengers List so I knew the year and the place in Germany that they left from. One was direct from Hamburg, the other was from Hamburg to Havre to US. So I ordered the international films for the years. So far I have seen the film for the one direct from Hamburg and it showed that the family was born in Stelle, SH, Germany. I am still waiting for the other film. My suggestion for you would be to order from FHL the international films for 1886, order the one for direct first and if you don't find him on that film then order the one for indirect. Hope this helps and maybe someone else on this list will be able to give you more information. Great idea, Elaine. Perhaps you can go into more detail about "direct" and "indirect" and even post the direct URL for the FHL at SLC. An exhaustive Ships Passenger Lists site is found at http://members.cox.net/hessen/ships.htm which should answer lots of questions, as well as help identify passengers. :-) Don ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elaine Neuhaus" <elaneu@dnet.net> My suggestion for you would be to order from FHL the international films for 1886, order the one for direct first and if you don't find him on that film then order the one for indirect.
Don asked that I go into more detail about direct and indirect. I was unable to find the FHL International film numbers when I went to FamilySearch which is the website for the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. So one of the volunteers at the FHC that I go to, was kind enough to look up the numbers for me. I have a few pages printed out with the film numbers for "direct" and can give them the ones for the years from 1850 to 1877 otherwise you would have to get them from your nearest FHC. The ones I have are for emigrants leaving from Hamburg Germany. "Direct" international film numbers are those passenger lists for those who left one port in Germany and sailed directly to the US. "Indirect" international film numbers are those passenger list for those who left one port in Germany and arrived in another port such as Havre France. Then they left from there and sailed to the US. For the first ancestor family that I was searching, I found them on the Ships Transcribers list arriving in NY on June 5, 1867. The top of the first page said that the ship sailed from Hamburg to New York. Since I did not know how long they would be at sea, I started looking for my "folks" in April 1867 but then found them leaving Hamburg less than three weeks before their arriving. The second ancestor family that I found, again on the Ships Transcribers list, arrived in NY in June 1872 and the top of the first page said that they left Hamburg and Havre. So when the film I ordered arrives, I will have to allow travel time for them having changed ships. I have been looking at the Ships Transcribers list on the internet for a long time and just recently found my ancestors. They are constantly adding ships to their website and I keep a record of the ones I have looked at so that I don't spend time looking again at the same ships! Both of these families left from Hamburg but there are films for other departing ports in Germany. I plan to eventually order some of those films in the future even though I don't know what ship or ships other ancestors sailed on. Since I know the years they emigrated plus that they came from Germany, I plan to take the time to order and search everything available. My biggest problem is the fact that they do not have printers only film readers at the FHC I go to. But my volunteer friend who helped me find the FHL International numbers, also used her digital camera to film the pages that had my ancestors on them. Any questions? I hope I made the above clear. Another interesting thing I found was that some of the lists departing from Hamburg had emigrants from other countries listed. Example, someone leaving a port in Sweden might have traveled to Hamburg and then from Hamburg to Havre and/or the US. As long as you know the year they emigrated, you might find that they made a few stops along the way. I still have the film for "direct" from Hamburg to the US for 1867. I could probably plan one day next week to look at the film again before returning it to Salt Lake. If that would help someone, I would be glad to do it but I would not be able to print out a copy of the page or pages. I could only try to decipher what I read and then type it to send. Good luck, hope this helps ya'll.
