Bob; In 2000, we went to Germany in late Apr/early May and everything was beautiful-green with lots of flowers blooming. We started off in Southern Germany and worked our way up to Schleswig-Holstein. Since it's so far north, maybe mid May would be the best time. We landed in Frankfort, rented a car and drove all over, with very few problems. We avoided the autobahn, so were able to get a better feel of the country. When we were ready to stop for the night (late afternoon or evening) we started looking for Gasthouses. We had very little trouble finding accommodations to suit us. This may not be the most efficient use of time, but it worked out great for us. It was an unforgettable trip. Hope yours is, too. My husband and I have been over a couple of times. We flew into Hamburg (changed planes in Amsterdam.) We were very comfortable driving a car there. The roads are very good. I agree with the others - there are lots of good accommodations at reasonable prices. We've stayed in Gasthouses and Ferienvonungs (vacation apartments). The latter give you the ability to do your own cooking if you choose. We were there the last time about the second week of May and it was still quite cool and cloudy, but not at all uncomfortable.
