    1. (S-H) BRINKHOFF
    2. I have reached the proverbial brick wall. Looking for any information on: Minnie BRINKHOFF (possibly Wilhelmine) born about 1859. She came to the US between 1870 and 1880. She married John Michael DITTMEYER in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1881 and they had a child born abt 1882 named Anton or Charles DITTMEYER (He later took the names PIEPER). In 1884 she married Charles PIEPER (My g-grandfather) in Lincoln and moved to Omaha. She died in a fire in their home in 1893 and there are no other records of her. Her burial records have no information. One marriage certificate shows her parents listed as Henry BRINKHOFF and Charlotte SEIFERT. Her obituary said she had a sister in Lincoln, a Mrs. Ehrlich. Charles PIEPER was from Massow, Prussia. Family stories indicated the ancestors were from Schleswig-Holstein and I wonder if Minnie was the one from the area. Anyone have any clues? No clues on older census records (1885 Nebraska) or church records found. Any help greatly appreciated. Susan Leighton

    3. The name Seifert is fairly common in the Lander of Saxony (from whence my father-in-law Herbert Seifert came) is believed by some to be associated with mining. Seifen means to wash and Seife means soap . One way to get some insight into where a family arose is to examine the phone listings for the name. You can do this on the net. The more unique the name the better but even with Seifert you may find a trend for a particualr locality in Germany. This is somewhat akin to using your fingers for walking the yellow pages. In a few cases the names of our ancestors were so unique that they left no one behind, e.g. Ankesheil) . Be assured this is not the case with Seifert. Another approach is to examine a good gazzeteer and look for place names which incorporate a surname. I do not recall any hits for Seifert using that method. The name Brink is very common in place names along a line running from Osnabruck to Hannover and unusual much removed. Brinkhoff fits the pattern and I seem to recall there is such a geographical designation although it has been 3-4 years since I did the distribution analysis. 3. I'm a bit familiar with the town of Massow as my Gutknecht line is from there. It is a town in Poland today, formerly Pommerania. It is east of Stettin (Szczencio) and north of Stargard. > From: SLL260A@aol.com > Reply-To: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 16:31:50 EDT > To: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [S-H-RTS] (S-H) BRINKHOFF > Resent-From: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com > Resent-Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 14:31:54 -0600 > > I have reached the proverbial brick wall.
