RE: Genealogy Workshop/Family Fair Scheduled for Mineola, Iowa A Mills County, Iowa-Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) Genealogy Workshop will be held in the Mineola, Iowa Community Center on Saturday, June 26, 2004. Registration begins at 9am and workshop hours are 10am-4:30pm. The event is open to the public. The workshop will focus on the immigrant families who came to Mills County, Iowa from villages in the Giekau Church District in Holstein including: Hohenfelde, Schwartbuck, Schmoel, Satjendorf, Gadendorf and the Estates of Panker and Neuhaus. Many descendants still live in the Mills County area or in northeastern Nebraska, especially Thurston, Pierce and Wayne counties. Family names associated with these areas include-Bichel, Carsten, Dorhman, Doorman, Dose, Dohse, Ehlers, Giese, Goos, Hagedorn, Hammer, Hansen, Jurgens, Kay, Kahl, Kruse, Lamp, Lau, Loof, Luth, Mathiesen, Miller Nagel, Nipp, Rohrberg, Roenfeld, Scheel, Schoening, Schroeder, Schutt, Steffens, Strohbehn, Stumpf, Vohs, Voss, Wiese, Wolf, Wulf. Morning workshop events include genealogy reports by family researchers and informational table displays. The afternoon agenda features a skit about 1885 Mineola life, a slide show of the German villages, a short history of both the German villages and Mineola/St. Mary's areas, and a tour of two Mills County churches and cemeteries that were part of the immigrants' lives. Workshop reservations are encouraged as seating is limited. Attendees who hope to make family genealogy connections should bring family genealogy information. Mineola, Iowa is located south of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Take Hwy. 275 to Barrus Road and use the second Mineola exit to reach the Mineola Community Center.
