Dear Ms. Oliver, Altona is a district in the City of Hamburg. At one time, a long time ago, it was a small separate village. Use your search engine to find out about Hamburg. The city does have its own web site and I believe it is in english also. Good luck, bob in Aurora, Colorado,USA ----- Original Message ----- From: susan oliver<mailto:hodgart@yahoo.com.au> To: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 19, 2004 1:06 AM Subject: [S-H-RTS] "Altona &Hannover" Hello To Everyone Could someone help me with any information on Altona Hamberg as to what kind of place it is or if I can find a web site for it.Also would anyone know about Granz Storde Hannover as it is the Birthplace of my GGGrandmother Metta Nibbe in 1832 and is on her marriage certificate which took place in Australia in 1856. Hello over there, Altona is a very interesting place, Earl Ernst von Schauenburg granted freedom of trade and religion. Altona (all too near) became a place for many refugees that time (from France, Holland, South Germany, Jews). When his son Earl Otto VI died in 1640 the Danish took over and this atmosphere of relative freedom continued, a town of Enlightenment! The people spoke German, they just got a new sovereign; they did not feel German or Danish, this national feeling was a result after the Napoleon wars later on. After the Dainsh war Altona became a German town in 1867 and part of Hamburg in 1937. Perhaps you have found Hamburg? look at: http://international.hamburg.de/index/ Susan, the place Granz Storde is unknown to me. Perhaps you mean Cranz, not so near to Stade, on the other side of the Elbe-river? Indeed kingdom of Hannover that time, now part of Hamburg. Regards Michael 60 miles south of Altona
