Then there was a war (or a series of armed quarrels between 1700 and 1720) and part of it became Danish again. Lord Palmerston, a British prime minister of Queen Victoria, is supposed to have said about Shleswig-Holstein that he knew of only three men who understood the situation there. One was Prince Albert, who was dead, another was a professor, who went insane, and himself - and he had forgotten. I suppose there are some who are readers of this group who can be more precise about the status of S-H in the years between 1580 and 1650 than I.
