    3. How does one ascertain which Schleswig (Schleswig, city in Germany or Slesvig area of Denmark) an ancestor came from when all I have so far is a record from a fraternal organization that says Nels C. Pederson(Niels Pedersen) was born May 10, 1854, Schleswig, Denmark? Unfortunately his 1933 death record/obit gave no information. I am still searching US records for more info but so far this is all I have. Thank you. "E"laine

    3. If he married in the US,you may want to find a marriage cert And hope they indicated the towns on it. I have an 1873 NYC Marriage certificate that indicates the towns in S-H that both The bride and groom came from. 3. Thanks, Diane. They did marry in the US and I have the marriage records. All it says is Denmark. And I am told that the naturalization record will also be of no help and obtaining that is another saga. I am pursuing other records and am awaiting a reply. Elaine

    3. EE. Sharp.....nothing is easy. My guess is that the document refers to the city of Schleswig, formerly in Denmark.....now just south of the Danish border in Schleswig/Holstein. Go to your nearest LDS genealogical library. They have both church records and censuses available from Salt Lake City re the city of Schleswig. I've been there......and looked at census records in the archive at Schloss Gottorf. I'd try the census records first......they include place of birth for all persons listed and you can find the whole family and other information. Admittedly, you'll have to struggle with the old German script.....with a bit of Danish twist if the censustaker was a Dane. John
