This is regarding the birth place of Asmus Diedrichsen/Diederichsen. He was born in April 1807. He became a Lutheran pastor and then came to America where he settled in Milwaukee. I have two sources to help, they read: 1) born in Gunnebye Parish, Ulsnisensis in Anglia Slesvicensi... 2) born in the village of Gunneby, in the parish of Alsen, in Schleswig... I see there is an island called Alsen, but the maps I have looked at do not show a village on the island with a spelling close to Gunneby. I would appreciate any help, Thanks. Greetings Tom, In my mapbook, there is a town named Ulsnis, and another named Ulsnisland, both just to the NE of the city of Schleswig, all on the Schlei (water channel going inland in a SW direction from the Ostsee). Nearby, also on that water channel, is the town of Gunneby. If you find Schleswig (city) on your map and follow the water channel (river? deep bay?) NE to the city of Kappeln near the mouth of the channel into the Ostsee, you will have passed by the towns in this order, Ulsnisland, Ulsnis, Gunneby--all of them are closer to Schleswig than to Kappeln. Angeln (Anglia?) is the name of the area protruding into the Ostsee/on the N side of the Schlei where these towns are found. (On the south side of the Schlei/N of Eckernfoerde (city) is Schwansen.) Can you find some or all of these towns and other features on your map? Hope this helps.
