    1. [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] Nelsen and Beneke familes both from northern edges of Hamburg
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: doughartley137 Surnames: Nelsen Nelson Flindt Beneke Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.germany.schleswig.general/6172.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Tanya, that is very interesting. The Nelsens are variously described in Australian records as being of German / Prussian or Danish origin. And you may know that they called their home in Uralla 'Altona', presumably after a place in Germany / Denmark that was close to their heart. And Altona, whilst now absorbed into the German city of Hamburg, was originally founded by Danes as a Danish port in competition with Hamburg and was part of Denmark - as was all of Schleswig-Holstein. I also suspect a connection to a place called Bloomdale, or Blumenthal. Interesting that the Nelsens and Benekes appear to come from almost neighbouring localities. Please let me know if you ever come across a woman called ALIRME FLINDT in your research. She is recorded in a will as a niece of Henry Nelsen and may be a clue to the Nelsen origins.
