It was the folks from Bremen that I had contact with, Klaus. My Grandfather emigrated in March of 1885 embarking from Bremen. (My regular computer is in the shop and I am on my laptop.) My grandmother and her daughter embarked from Hamburg in 1886. Neither record was available for those dates as they were lost or destroyed according to their offices. I was forever grateful to him though as it was he who put me in contact with someone at the records office which ended in my being able to get my grandfathers marriage record, and my Aunt's birth record. I guess he felt sorry for me at the time. I know my Grandfather came legally as my mother had his service discharge papers early in the last century, but destroyed them at the advice of some idiots in WW1. Anyway, the gentleman's email is on my other computer, and I can't give you the precise timeline. When it comes back, I will give the precise dates that he said were missing. The early 1850 ' ies are not exhaustive as not every small number of emigrants were registered (under 25 persons, I think). 62 passenger lists of the year 1853, from Jan. to mid May, are lost. The records of departures from Bremen(passenger lists) for the whole 19 th century were destroyed. Nobody saw a good reason for keeping them. They were simply thrown away. I replied to Klaus Riecken in a bilateral mail. His question (in German) was if there was any insight as to how large the portion of illegal emigrants was, the ones who left without permits, especially the young men who were in a draftable age. I think the statistics I published must have come from port authorities, as only they would have known the destinations of emigration, and the exact count. And therefore, I think that the figures include the illegal emigrants, as well. They did not swim over to America. But I dare not take a guess at the question how big their percentage was of the total.
