Catherine WEINTZ was b. abt. 1833 or 1834 in Hesse-Darmstadt, and m. John G. SCHINDLER about 1850 in NY. I am not 100% certain of her family, but the most probable match is one Christian WEINTZ who immigrated from Hesse-Darmstadt to New York in 1837, made his declaration of intent in 1838 and became a citizen in 1840. Christian's wife, Barbara, followed him in 1838, bringing 3 young daughters: Christina, 7, Barbara, 6, and "Chatrine", 5. I believe "Chatrine" is my Catherine, but don't have enough to prove that yet. Christian WEINTZ settled in Cochecton, Sullivan County, New York -- the period between 1837 - 1840 saw a large influx of German settlers to this part of Sullivan County. Christian and Barbara WEINTZ went on to have several more children b. in NY. Although the family seems to have preferred the WEINTZ spelling, I've seen almost every imaginable variation on the theme, including WINCE (1850 census), WEINZ, WENTZ, WEINS.
