    1. [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] Advice Needed for Research in Schleswig Holstein Area
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jebbythefish Surnames: Jansen, Peers, Biers Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.germany.schleswig.general/6378/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I have been trying for some time to trace my family back to Germany/Denmark, but I seem to be hitting only dead ends. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how I should proceed. The information that I have to work with is this: Charles Jansen, born in Denmark in approximately 1829, immigrated to the US in 1850 via New York and died in Georgia. I cannot find him on the Hamburg Passenger Lists. His original name was either Carl, Niclaus, or Claas. Per the family bible, he was born on the island of Sylt. There is a reasonable match in Sylt (Claas Jansen, born 1829) but, in conjunction with the Sylt archives, I am unable to definitely prove that he is the correct person. Prior to immigrating, he married Catherine, who was born about 1829. Her mother's last name is Biers/Peers, so this may be her maiden name (or her mother remarried after her birth). They had a son, Herman Jansen, in December, 1850. In 1851, Catherine, her son, and her mother immigrated to New York. On the Hamburg Passenger Lists, they all stated they were from Uetersen. Unfortunately, a professional genealogist was unable to locate any records relating to them in Uetersen. I feel that my best bet is to find the christening record of Herman Jansen (since I have a fairly definite idea of his birthdate and name) and then work backwards from there. However, the only clue to his birthplace was the Hamburg Passenger List, and that turned up negative. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed from here? I feel like I have exhausted all resources for information in the US, but I really don't want to just give up. The sources that I have used in the US are: family bible, graveyard records, church records, local newspaper articles, obituaries, military records, deeds, wills, coroner's inquests, passenger arrival lists, naturalization records, and address books. Outside of the US, I have tried the Hamburg Passenger Lists, Sylt Archiv, and the search in Uetersen. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! I looked at your other post way back in 1999. Our Anne Nilsen is only recorded thus In Aust. but elsewhere as /Anna Nielsen/Nilsdatter/ Nielsdotter/ married Anders Christian Frandsen in 1844 in the Schleswig Holstein area (from Military Records only). I shall have to recheck those dates also but wish to reply initially now. Basic tree is there for viewing; my ancestor line is from their son Hans Christian Frandsen (b. 1854?)who came to Australia in 1870 and married Mary Jane Kearney. I have not done any real research in Denmark as yet, (need to be sure of Australian research first)nor found any of Hans' siblings, but the name Pedersen seems to keep cropping up as a possibility; also Hansen, Andersen and (Frideriksen) Christiansen and others but as yet unconfirmed. It is most likely that Hans` siblings, one or more may have gone to U.S. Would like to clear this up. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I have a Harders relationship with Ken Harders of Grand Island, Nebraska. Ken has done extensive research on his family there and (this is a long shot), may have further information re other early German settlers in that area. The Harders came from around Marne, Holstein in 1865 and 1866 to Australia, and later in 1880's, some remaining members also departed via Hamburg for the USA. It is likely that they were all part of the German community in and around Grand Island, Nebraska during those early days. John Harders Tasmania, Australia. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 12, 2011 3:17 PM Subject: [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] Rohr / Rohwer > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: Freudenberg > Surnames: Rohr, Wiese, Schnecklot , Muhs > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.germany.schleswig.general/653.682.706.2303.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I have a Clause Rohr born abt. 1800; married abt 1820. 3. Greetings from Australia. After years of research with mixed results, we decided to hire the services of Klaus Struve, a genealogist based in Kiel. Thanks to his professional skills, we have suddenly made huge progress in understanding our ancestry. I strongly recommend you to follow a similar process: do your own research for a while, and once there is no more progress, then consider hiring a local specialist. Good Luck! Vanda and Paul
