    3. Start searching and see! I have my data on Ancestry. Nothing happened for along time, then in 2008 I had a note from a cousin in Hamburg that we had a common ancestor. It was a thrill for me to find them. I didn't look a lot like my Irish relatives and found that I resembled my German half more so! I only wish I had found them sooner and while my husband was still with us, and we were still traveling. We went to Bayreuth in the early 2000's, and were only a hop skip and a jump from Hamburg. At 87, traveling alone does not appeal to me! One never knows where help comes from. I have found out that most of the people I have had contact with on sites and lists (including this one) have been very kind and generous with their time. Dorothea

Don't forget that there two ends of the shipping records, the arrival records in America and the departure records in Hamburg. The focus of these two sets of records is different. The German end is more interested in whether or not they've done their National Service, on the run etc etc and as a result is far more interested in the exact place of origin. Furthermore, if they stayed in Hamburg for more than a few days, they would have had to register their presence with the Hamburg Police. These Transients Registers show the full date and place of birth of the people. The records have been microfilmed years ago by the LDS and can be ordered into your local LDS library. https://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titleno=193218&disp=Meldeprotokolle für Fremden 1 &columns=*,0,0 Regards David Western Australia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. It's very likely your ancestors left from Hamburg......You can review the passenger lists for a couple years and you may find a ton of info....you can't just ask the internet to do your genealogy for you. J

    3. Teva....the advice you have received so far is good......I have traced my moher's ancestors ()Schoolmann....Wagner...& many others) to1575 in SH. Church records are the best....then the Dancensuses.........censuses and some chuch records are available thru LDS.....you'd get more help if you gave specifric names and dates and probable date of entry into US. 3. You're probably not going to find a "birth certificate" for the 1830s or 1860s. At best, you may find what's called a "Taufschein," which immigrants sometimes asked the pastors in their birth village to prepare for them so that they could prove their legitimate birth in North America. Municipalities didn't prepare birth certificates, and in most cases, they didn't keep birth registers. The baptismal records, documenting birth and parentage, were kept by the local church. If you know what your ancestors' home villages were, perhaps those church books have been copied by the Mormon Family History Center; you can order and view them. Two caveats, however: First, I'm not as familiar with local practices in Schleswig-Holstein as I am with those in southwest Germany, where there was little if any maintenance of vital records by the village administrations. Civil registration and census-taking were somewhat more common in Denmark. And since Denmark controlled the two provinces for a long time, at least some villages there should have better civil records than the German villages do. Second, I haven't found that many of the church records in Schleswig-Holstein were copied, at least not in comparison to the copying of church records from Baden, Wuerttemberg, and Hessen. I've always assumed (but don't know for certain) that the areas in the U.S. occupational zone in post-war Germany were more willing to allow Americans to microfilm their records; Schleswig-Holstein was in the British sector, I believe. If you know the name of your village, you should check the catalog of microfilms for the village by going to www.familysearch.org . Click on library, then catalog, then input the name(s) of the village(s). You'll see what, if anything, is available. If there isn't anything there, then you should write directly to the village Rathaus (the local municipal organization). One idea if you don't know the villages: The Danish Archive has digitized surviving census records, some back to 1830, and has placed them on line. The names of the two German provines were Slesvig and Holsten. You could try inputting the names of your ancestors on that site. Go to http://www.ddd.dda.dk/dddform_uk.asp Good luck!
