Hi Clay, Have made this trip 3 times and had bought J.Carlyle Parkers book "Going to Salt Lake City to do Family History Research". It has all info you need and then some. You might be able to check out this book in a Library near you. The next best thing is always the front desk as you come into the building. They will furnish you with the lay-out of the building. All staff is most helpful. In the copy room you can buy a little plastic card and load it with money and use it in the copiers as credit card, it saves time. The card never expieres. I still have mine for when I go back or you may donate the card to a fellow searcher, no names are used. For me it has been a wonderful experience. Don't forget to look around Temple Square. Everything is within walking distance. The Tabernacle choir is worth listening to even if you only catch them at practice. Recording sessions are on Thursday mornings, from what I remember. Good hunting and enjoy the achival feast. Margarete C, AZ

Juan, Locate the closest church in the nearest town. Records are not always in the town of birth, marriage etc. Usually they are found in the nearest town with a church. If they were not Catholic they may be registered in a Catholic church if there is no other church convenient. You need to use a little imagination to seek out some of the records! I've been a member of this list for several years, and I have appreciated how helpful the list members are to others. I am traveling to Salt Lake City in early October, and plan to visit the LDS archives. Hopefully others on this list have previously traveled to the LDS center at Salt Lake City, so you can you share some tips on where to go and how to approach it. Since I've concentrated on family information and files to develop my information base, this will be my first attempt to use any of the LDS services, but this seems an opportune time to begin. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to approach the use of the LDS files. Any recommendations or suggestions? Thanks in advance, Clay Seattle Researching: Loges, Hansen, Kirkendall, Purchase, Berggren, Comer

Hello everyone, I've been trying to find information (mainly the birth certificate) about an ancestor of mine born in Lehmbek, Germany. H Sharon, Thank you so very much for the info regarding the address for Vital Statistics in NE, and for the idea about trying NE Vital Records on line. (You are the only respondent, and I was beginning to think there would be no hope.) You're most kind in offering your help, and if I have no luck with the suggested resources, I may be back in touch with you! Again, many thanks for your reply. It is greatly appreciated! Jeanne (New Jersey)
Jeanne, If you think Charles may have died in Omaha, NE you could check for his death certificate at the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Lincoln, NE. Address is 301 Centennial Mall South, POB 95065, Lincoln, NE 68509. Or you can go to NE vital records on your search engine and it will give you more specific instructions for obtaining that information. If he died in NE that record should tell you where he is buried, etc and perhaps that will lead to more places to search. I live in Lincoln and am less than an hour from Omaha so let me know if I can help. GOOD LUCK! Sharon

Good luck in Nebraska. Local newspaper genealogy can be very helpful, and since Nebraska is so county-oriented, you might find names in individual county records, where I had some good success. Grand Island's library has a remarkable genealogy dept. for a town its size, if you don't find satisfaction in Omaha. A branch of my S-H originated family, the Bentzenbergs, settled in Buffalo County (Kearney the county seat) after leaving Moline, Illinois, and I was able to contact several unknown family members and most of the family buriel sites thanks to a marriage news clipping from 1901! If you're in the midwest, it really helps to go there yourself to search. Best wishes Marcia Whitcomb

Hello, Lyn, take any picture of wooden clogs and write "Tueffles" underneath it. That's it. "Tueffels" is derived from low German "Tueffeln", just spelt the American way, with an "s" for more than one. And "Tueffeln" is short for "Pantueffeln", low German (Platt-deutsch) again, for Pantoffeln (standard German), which again is based on an Italian word. To some people, "Tueffeln" was more than just a thing to put on their feet. It was a seasonal job to make them from wood that was easily carved, like poplar. They worked on farms while there was something to do, from spring to threshing time in autumn, then, in winter, when nobody needed their workforce, they sat down and engaged in little crafts, of which the carving of "Tueffeln" was one. Klaus (Struve) in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein (genealogical researcher) Lyn Batdorf schrieb: > Has anyone got a sketch or picture of Tueffles? I'd like to include it in my family book.
