    1. [S-H-RTS] S-H Migrants Attitude to World War 1- Kopplemann
    2. Gillian Baker
    3. I have been reading a book on German Anzacs in the 1st World War( for those who don't know ANZAC is Australia and New Zealand Army Corps). In this book it states that some S-H people who migrated where anti German. "Given the forced incorporation of their duchy into Prussia in the 1860's, the original Kopplemans (or Koppelmanns) might even be regarded as political refugees; certainly, they would have had little love for the post-1870 Bismarckian Reich." and other similar statements are relatively frequently aired in the book. I know some people emigrated for land and others to avoid military service but would they have emigrated because of the German/ Bismark/Prussen take over of the area? Could this explain why one ancestor who left S-H in 1862 considered himself German when his son-in-law born 10km away in S-H who emigrated in 1871 said he was of 'Danish background'. Regards Gillian

    1. [S-H-RTS] S-H Migrants - German or Dane?
    2. <<Could this explain why one ancestor who left S-H in 1862 considered himself German when his son-in-law born 10km away in S-H who emigrated in 1871 said he was of 'Danish background'.>> I have just signed up on this list, and have not researched this at all, but my husband's grandfather immigrated from S-H in June 1881 (any pointers for finding him on a ship listing or naturalization would be much appreciated) and he called himself German. After he settled in Iowa, he met a man with whom he had attended school in S-H, and that man called himself Danish. You all have probably discussed this at great length (I haven't found the archives yet), but didn't control of S-H go back and forth between the Germans and Danes several times? Any and all tips/clues/connections will be very much appreciated. Huge Blessings, Debra Claussen Looking for Claussen from Marne and Nordhusen, Meyer and Stiegelmeyer from Mecklenberg, Carsten from Kattrepel (1820's)

S E P T E M B E R 2003 ist das letzte Gebäude der Auswanderungshallen in Hamburg zu besichtigen!!!!!!! UHRZEIT: 12 und 14 UHR mit Führung! KOSTEN: Keine! My husband's ancestor (Andreas Witze) was married 21 March 1762 at St Johannis-FL, along with at least 7 of his soldier companions.....a "combined marriage ceremony". This suggests to me that there may have been an army base/garrison in Flensburg at that time. Are there any records of this? Thnx

    2. Hello to the group members: Here is more information on my ggrandparents. George (could be Georg, or Jorgen with the line through the o) emigrated to the U. S. in 1879, according to census documentation. His name was misspelled as Anderson in the census. He was naturalized and owned his own farm. Sophie emigrated in 1882. George and Sophie may have married in the USA because the census showed they had been married 18 years in 1900 and had had six children born and six children living. Their children were Carl b Aug 1885, Olaf b Dec 1887, Margartha b Sept 1890, Hansthe (or Hans) b Oct 1892, Simon b Apr 1896, and Sophus dates unknown. I am researching George and Sophie in earnest, as they are the only branch of the family tree that is not clear to me. Is it possible that Sophie was Norwegian? The EN spelling of Andersen, I was always told, was Danish. I look for guidance to this group. Thank you for any help you can provide to me. Carol
