    3. Dear Members, Since several weeks I had set the gateway between the Board and the Mailinglist on a moderated status. So I was able to delete a lot of mails before they reached the mailinglist. Now the gateway is open again and no longer moderated by me. Let us see if this works now. If you read eMails which were written originally on the Board, than please visit the Board and write your response there. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.ceeurope.germany.schleswig.general Thank you. 1. [S-H-RTS] 1835 Census of Kirchspiel Elmshorn
    2. Bev MacLeod
    3. At the Rigsarkivet in Copenhagen there is a fantastic version of the Volkszahlregister 1835 for Kirchspiel Elmshorn which contains not only the people but also their church records ( e g parents' names, marriages, indicators directing one to earlier or later censuses,) and even Gravert Hof numbers. I believe there is also a volume with similar information on the 1803 Census. They were compiled by Manfred Thomsen. I don't know how widely available they are, but they are certainly well worth consulting for those with families in Elmshorn. Does anyone know if they available in Australia? Beverley

    3. Hi, Don't know if you received replies from anyone else but I just sent you the 1910 census with Barthold Fick. Would have replied sooner but we just arrived home after a three week trip. My husband's mother was a Fick. Her grandparents, Wilhelm and Maria Fick arrived in the US about the same time as your Barthold and Maria Fick! I will email again in another day or two with the info that I have. Since I could only find the 1910 census, perhaps they lived with another family or one of their children before 1910 and would have been enumerated with them. So I would not be able to find them. If you had access to any other census that have an index, they would show up on those films and would indicate who they were living with (ie enumerated). But I hope that maybe someone else has sent you some info in the meantime. Will get back to you. 1. [S-H-RTS] 1860 census for Carlum, SCH
    2. Iris
    3. Hi Robbie Some time ago when my cousin's son was on business in Denmark, his Danish name drew the attention of the person with whom he had an appointment. He enquired about it and my cousin's son told him that his ggrandparemts came from Schleswig, but that was all he knew. The businessman said his mother could read the old Danish script and that she would see if she could find out anything. She gave him one page of the census with my grandfather at the age of 4 and his parents, Carl Hansen PETERSEN and Ingeborg ANDRESEN or ANDERSEN. That is all the information I have on the matter. Recently I have been in touch with a Danish woman who has kindly found the marriage of my gt grandmother who married Christian NIELSEN at Ensted and gave me the details together with the birthdates of both of them. It is rather difficult in New Zealand to find out anything - especially when I cannot speak Danish. My Danish grandparents arrived in New Zealand about 1880 and married in New Zealand in 1882. They were Peter PETERSEN and Anna Catherina NIELSEN. They did not teach their children any Danish. Iris from Auckland, New Zealand

    1. Re: [S-H-RTS] S-H Migrants Attitude to World War 1- Kopplemann
    2. Hi List, I do not know about other migrants from Schleswig- Holstein but my ancestors certainly did not migrate for political reasons, in fact I think this claim of political migration and anti Bismarck tales is very much overdone. Yes, I remember my father telling me that his father claimed to be Danish but this was totally a result of anti-German hysteria in Australia during WW1 & WW11. I understand that many people from Schleswig- Holstein migrated to USA after the various civil wars against Denmark, now if they were against the militant policies of Bismarck, it was very strange of these Germans to be fighting in the American wars. greetings Wayne I have been reading a book on German Anzacs in the 1st World War( for those who don't know ANZAC is Australia and New Zealand Army Corps). In this book it states that some S-H people who migrated where anti German. "Given the forced incorporation of their duchy into Prussia in the 1860's, the original Kopplemans (or Koppelmanns) might even be regarded as political refugees; certainly, they would have had little love for the post-1870 Bismarckian Reich." and other similar statements are relatively frequently aired in the book. I know some people emigrated for land and others to avoid military service but would they have emigrated because of the German/ Bismark/Prussen take over of the area? Could this explain why one ancestor who left S-H in 1862 considered himself German when his son-in-law born 10km away in S-H who emigrated in 1871 said he was of 'Danish background'. Regards Gillian

    1. [S-H-RTS] Danes saying they came from Germany
    2. Iris
    3. Hi Gillian and List My grandparents were born in Schleswig which was taken over by the Prussians in the 1860s, so when they emigrated to New Zealand they had to say they came from Germany. They married in 1882 in New Zealand and their children were always told they were Danish. They were Peter PETRSEN born c1856, son of Carl Hansen PETERSEN and Ingeborg ANDERSEN or ANDRESEN, who were living in Carlum, SCH, when the 1860 census was taken, and Carl was said to be a carpenter, and Anna Catherina NIELSEN, dau. of Christian NIELSEN and Anna Catherina Petersen KIRKMANN , who came from somewhere around the same area. Christian and Anna Catherina were married at the Lutheran Church in Ensted on 25 Feb. 1855. They were living in Abenraa at the time. Iris from Auckland, New Zealand
