I am researching the NAVE/NAEHWE/NEIVE surname. My great-great-grandfather, Hans Heinrich Nave, came to America in 1852 or 1853 with his parents and 5 siblings, through New Orleans and up the Mississippi River to Davenport, Iowa, and then across the river to settle in Moline, Illinois. I am trying to find the town where Hans was born - and also am trying to find his father's name. Unfortunately his father died of illness on the trip up the Mississippi. Hans' mother's name was Christina (maiden name unknown). Is anyone researching this surname? While I have a few brick walls, my Schleswig-Holstein brick wall concerns my maternal great-grandparents. Catharina Sophia STARKEN was from Hamburg, but I think more likely Neumunster, Born: 3 Dec. 1951 Died: 2 Mar. 1937 in Chicago, Illinois USA Parents unknown. Her mother may have married a second time to HOFELDT She came to the USA in November 1881, arriving in Chicago in time for my grandmother's birth on 9 Dec. 1881. Her husband, Frederick August KALBITZ was born in Gebesee, near Erfurt. Born: 23 May 1853 Died: 31 Dec 1927 In Chicago, Illinois USA He was a blacksmith by trade. Apparently he worked in Hamburg after he left Gebesee. Family story is that he left Germany one step ahead of being arrested. I have a copy of a paper from Erfurt, stating that he was banned from Hamburg and its environs for his political activities (Social Democrat). I have not found when he came to Chicago, but family lore is that it was a few months ahead of his wife. He set up a blacksmith shop in Chicago, later going into the manufacture of tools. The couple had three sons while in Germany: Frederick, Ernest and Herman. All three boys died before the age of 3 years, the last one shortly before Catharina sailed from Hamburg. In Chicago they had two daughters, Elfrida (my grandmother) and Amelia. Lois Mack Schill with another bigger brick wall in Elsass-Lothringen

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Ohlson / Ohlsen Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kVC.2ACE/3362 Message Board Post: Im trying to locate info on Cpt Frederick Ohlson, born abt 1831 Flensburg. I have a copy of Natrualisation in New Zealand, he stated that his past Nationality was Danish. There has been some talk in the family that the surname spelling was changed from OHLSEN to OHLSON, which it is currently today. The family rumour it was done, perhaps so he would not get mistaken as german, who knows ??.It was Ohlson on the Natrualisation docs.Frederick was a Shipmaster, and possibly in the Danish Navy, although I have yet to varify this.It is also possible that his fathers name was Marcus, this has also yet to be varified. He died in NZ 1894. Thankyou for any future assistance.
My father: Percy Albert (known as Albert Percy) PETERSEN b 29 July 1890 in Dalefield, New Zealand. and died in Auckland, New Zealand, 1 Oct 1958. His parents emigrated from Schleswig which had been taken over by the Prussians. I do not know whether they knew each other in Denmark. My grandfather was Peter PETERSEN, b c6 Sep 1860, son of Carl Hansen Petersen and Ingeborg ANDERSEN or ANDRESEN. They were on the 1860 census for Carlum, SCH. in1860. Peter married my grandmother, Anna Catherina NIELSEN, (b c1864), in Greytown, New Zealand 11 March 1882. Anna's parents were Christian NIELSEN, born 28 Feb 1830 in Tegelwang, Nieboll, Denmark, and Anna Cathrina Petersen KIRKMANN, b 14 Aug 1831 in Hashoj, Sealand, Slots, Bjerghy, Denmark Anna died 17 July 1896 in Carterton, New Zealand. Christian died 27 July 1898 in Matarawa, New Zealand. I cannot find out which ships the family came in to New Zealand. Family lore says the "Fritz Reuter". My grandfather, Peter Petersen, said on his Naturalisation Papers that he was born in Flensburg. On the Carlum census he was said to have been born in Carlum. I uplifted his will from the Registry and there was an affidavit with it signed by two of his sons to say that he was born in Maribo, Island of Lolland. I have no idea which one is correct. I trust the above is the type of information you require. Iris Curson, nee Petersen.
Looking for information in S-H on Christian Nielsen THARSING (or THAARSING) ancestors. He was born April 1848, reportedly in S-H. LDS website has record of Christian THARSING (one "a") christened 21 April, 1848 in Aabenraa, Aabenraa-Sonderborg, Denmark. Additional information has a Sophia THAARSING (2 "a's") christened 27 Nov, 1853. This is sibling of Christian, despite the slight difference in spelling of surname. Biography of Christian states he left S-H in 1864, traveled the seas for several years, arriving in the US in 1868, possibly leaving S-H to avoid military service. Christian and Sophia's father was Neils Christian THARSING, mother was Metta ALMAND/ALMIND. Numerous searches of census records were unsuccessful. I would like to learn more of Christian's departure from S-H and arrival 4 years later in the US as well as his ancestors in S-H. Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jeanne K
