    1. [S-H-RTS] COMMENTS TO LIST
    2. Karla Nurnberg
    3. Dear Listers, Please do not buy the Genealogy book about Schwabstedt, because you can order it on microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake. Then, you can search it at a branch library near you. If I remember correctly, you need to pay attention to patronymic surname changes. I helped a woman research it several years ago. In fact, we started research in Husum, but we soon discovered that we should be searching parishes in Kreis Husum and not the city of Husum. I was happy that we did search Husum first though, because I found one of the missing brothers to my Justus KALKBRENNER of Heide. I looked up Sipsdorf in Meyer's Gazetteer and it said to look under Luebbersdorf. Both these localities are in Kreis Oldenburg. Hopefully, this will be of some help to you. As for the listers interested in FRAHM in Meggersdorf, my ancestress Christina FRAHM was born in Meggersdorf about 1696. Her father was Hinrich FRAHM of Meggersdorf, whom I think was buried on 21 Aug 1733 in Berghusen. The Meggersdorf records were housed in the parish of Berghusen. The Family History Library has Berghusen on microfilm, but there are gaps (Luecke) for some of the years during the 1700's. Please do not write to me asking for me to search these records during the 1800's, but write to the pastor in Berghusen. The FHL only has films for the 1700's. Also, I cannot take time to research your family from Germany before 1850, when the Hamburg Passenger Lists begin and the GERMANS TO AMERICA volumes begin. I have only a little time to help you, because I am researching my own family, my husband's and a few clients only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday due to health reasons. Karla Nurnberg P.S. I am happy to help, when I can. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Shopping - with improved product search

    1. [S-H-RTS] roll call: finke, Vinche, Vinke
    2. Looking for Heinrich Vinke born in or near Schoenberg Propstei in Nov. 1846, he had a brother Peter and a sister Dora. I think his father may have been Hans. They came to USA around 1865, but I have not been able to verify this family story. Looks as though the name was originally Finke, still researching this. Would like to know more about his parents and siblings and if Finke is the correct spelling. thanks mary

    1. [S-H-RTS] GERMANS TO AMERICA
    2. I have done some research using the Germans to America printed volumes, the FTM CD transcription of G to Am, and the microfilmed manifests at NARA. It is my understanding that G to Am used the manifests in Europe and not those in the U.S. as a source. Does anyone know for sure about the G of Am source? This may be important as the manifests for Bremen were destroyed in WW2 and only the Hamburg manifests still exist. NARA, of course, has the arrival information. Germans to America does not cover dates before 1850. The National Archives does NOT have an index for New York passengers for the years 1847 to 1897 so Germans to America is likely the only source for these years. If you know the date and port of arrival then you can find the manifest at NARA. The FTM CD has all individuals sorted by surname while the printed volumes are by year so each has some utility. But you still need to look at the original manifest to be sure you have the right person or family. My great grandfather, Henry Lotz, died just months before the 1900 census so I don't have an arrival year. H., Henry, or Heinrich Lotz is not an uncommon name so I had many candidates even after narrowing the years down based on birth date and census. Henry is in the 1880 California census and his wife, my great grandmother, Geesche, is in the 1900 census. However, they met and married in San Francisco. I've found a prospective brother of Henry's, Frank Lotz, in the 1880 California census who is also in the 1900 census and that supplied a year and I found H. Lotz and Fritz Lotz in G to Am and in the NARA manifests leaving Marseilles on different vessels and arriving in New York only ten days apart in 1865. The census is the only indication I have that tells me they were from Holstein. It is important to find the original manifest so you can see who else was on the vessel. This might provide more family members and this can confirm that you have the right person from G to Am. I have a large number of Swiss ancestors from Canton Bern. These are also in G to Am. I found several in the FTM CD and thought I had a match, but when I looked at the NARA manifest it was obviously a different family; same surname and many of the same first names but the ages and many of the siblings did not match. I did confirm many of the Swiss ancestors as a whole group arrived together in New Orleans. Finding one of this group in G to Am and then looking up the NARA manifest for that person, supplied a couple dozen more people that I was looking for. I have the FTM CD of G of Am for 1850 to 1874. I don't have the second disk for dates after 1874. I don't have access to the printed volumes, at least not easily, as I would have to go to the Library of Congress to see these. I have to go to the Archives for the manifests. Trips to downtown D.C. do not occur often and I tend to have a long list of to-dos. One thing I found in these trips is the use of the copy machine. It is a lot faster to make copies of census sheets at NARA and pages from books at the LC than to try to transcribe them on the spot. The study and transcriptions can be done later at home when time is not as constrained. You can find more detail at: http://sdmbizlists.home.infionline.net/LotzGene.html and http://sdmbizlists.home.infionline.net/SchindlerGene.html Steve McLeod Broad Run, Virginia http://smcleod.home.infionline.net/ genealogy@broadrunit.com

    2. M. Crossland
    3. Hi Susan, have just gone through my back log of E Mail. I would not be surprised if your Kruse's are from Hohenhorst, that is if you mean the one between Gnissau and Ahrensbök. My Kruse's are from that area and lived on a farm in the Wildkoppel. The area is considered Hohenhorst (still). I do not have Friedrich or Catharina Magdalena Kruse in my tree but then I doubt that I have all the siblings rounded up. If you care to respond with dates, please before 13 Oct, since I am practically on my way to Germany. I am curious, Margarete C., AZ

Catharina FRAHM (all that I know about her is that her parents were Hans Hinrich FRAHM who was a farmer from Meggerdorf and Catharina MAHRT) Christina's parents were: Hans Hinrich KOLL a resident of Neuboem, S-H and Dorothea RASMUS Any information anyone has that might tie into this is greatly appreciated. 2. I have just learned that my g-grandparents, Nels Nelson and his wife Dorothea (Hansen) Nelson immigrated to Middlesex County, NJ (port of NY, presumably) in 1876. They had a daughter, Hannah, age 8, and a son, Hans Peter, age 4, and Dorothea was pregnant at the time. She may have delivered the third child on the ship, but I'm not sure. His name was Carl Louis and I know that he was born in 1876. If your offer applies to this vague a request, I'd appreaciat anything you can find. Kathryn Jensen Jewett

    3. Hello to Keith Freese, I have a book on "Schwabstedt--5000 Jahre Schwabstedter Geschichte", by Hans Meyer. Dr. Meyer was a practicing physician in Schwabstedt for 35 years, and his book is well crafted. A bookstore in Husum had no reference on it, but I was able to get a copy in a little store in Schwabstedt. It is printed in German. My ancestors in Schwabstedt were the Jacobs family.
