Hi, To the person with an ancestral line of Schneekloth, please send me the names of people for whom you are looking with that surname. There is a book at the FHL with people with that surname from an area in Eastern Holstein. For the woman, who is looking for a Frahm married to a Deertz, I checked the 1835 census for all Frahms, but I do not remember anyone with the maiden name Deertz. However, some of the married women with not listed with their maiden names. The Bergenhusen parish registers cover a lot of the 1700's and the 1800's and I plan on looking at these on Wednesday to extract more Frahm families. My brickwall has been, trying to find out where my great-grandfather August Meyer, was born in Germany. His birthdate was February 9, 1866, and it was said to be in Schleswig-Holstein. His father's name was Carl Meyer, mother unknown. He came to the United States approximately 1880-1884 at the age of 15. He settled in Muscatine, Iowa where he met his future wife Martha Ikelman, they moved to Denver, Colorado, where Martha's brother lived and they were married November 10, 1891, at St. Patricks Catholic Church, Denver. They lived in Denver for 5 years, next moving to Cordova, Illinois, they lived there for 1 year, and then moved again back to Muscatine, Iowa residing there for 1 1/2 years. August worked at the Button Factory as a foreman. Their Two children Carl Henry Meyer and Gertrude Lillian Meyer were born there. Next they moved to Davenport, Iowa approximately 30 mile from Muscatine. this is where the finally settled and raised their family. August became a Davenport Policeman retiring in 1941. He died March 6, 1946 at the age of 80. Any information would be greatly appreciated. August was a very private person , and spoke nothing of Germany or his family there. Thank you, Marcia

Ghyll, One of the surnames I am researching is LUELOFF. Sometimes the old script is difficult to decipher, I wonder if we may be searching for information on the same name. After seeing your post I will include Lueloss in my searchings and let you know if I find any connection. After coming to America, my Lueloff's changed the spelling to Lulloff. Hello List, One of my brick wall is my great great grandfather and grandmother. There names are Ernst Denser and Grete Thede. The came to America in March, 1881, They arrived in New York. Ernst Denser was born approx. 1844. We are told that his father owned a "department store," and her father was a school teacher. Ernst and Grete went straight to Nebraska and soon had a child. We are not sure if they had family there. The child was named Carl Peter August Denser. The family did show up in the 1885 census with a different spelling of the last name, Dienser. The census taker wrote his translation of the last name. (my thought). Any information would be great. Thank You, Cindie Hobbs
My wife, who is literate in three languages, thinks the machine translations are hopeless. She does admit that one can get the essence of the source viewed through a prism of very bad grammar. She says the most serious problem is something called in French a "false friend." Don't ask me what the French word is that she used. This is where a word is translated literally from one language to another, but in the context it means something entirely different. There is also the problem such as translating "Venetian Blinds" or "blind Venetian." I once saw the Russian for a hydraulic ram translated as water goat. That is probably an example of a "false friend." In the U.S. there was a popular car named Nova. In English this name implies great power and brilliance. Chevrolet could not understand why they were having trouble selling this car in Mexico until someone pointed out that "no va" means in Spanish "doesn't go." I have used some sites on line in the past for a few lines to translate another language to English. There are many (nonEnglish) German, Austrian and Czech sites that I'd like to research. I don't speak/read the languages. So I thought there might be software that would do the job fairly accurately. A Google search brought up many choices. One of my Austrian relatives who does not speak English uses translation software which seems to do a reliable job of translating my e-mails to him. Since these lists have so many people with such broad experience, I thought I'd ask for experiences/recommendations. Thanks for any suggestions. Hello, I am searching for the small sailing ship that went from Bremen to Baltimore, Maryland. The books start in 1850. THere is talk about starting earlier at some point. However, it would be easy to search the passenger ship lists (if available for that year) as there would not be too many. Dear members of the mailing lists, The AKVZ e.V. and the transcript of census registers The AKVZ e.V. (Work Circle Census Registers Schleswig-Holstein) wishes to convey here with details of its project to gather census data for Schleswig-Holstein: Transcripts are prepared without remuneration by volunteers. For this task the AKVZ e.V. is soliciting dedicated coworkers !!! The WinKip program, used by our Danish friends for years to transcribe data is now also available in German. An English version is being developed. This program is being used exclusively for the transcripts to ensure that the results are compatible with the Danish data bank, and will be freely available to anyone by way of data bank inquiries. The AKVZ e.V. cooperates with: LAS, the Schleswig-Holstein Provincial Archives; CAU, the Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel; AK, Work Circle Economic and Social History, Schleswig-Holstein; DIS-Danmark, Danish Data Processing; DDA, Danish Data Archive; as well as other scientific and historical institutions. For further information: http://www.akvz.deger/partnerD.html Now the AKVZ e.V. is in a funded position to foster the transcript of census registers, drawing on the resources of the GHSG (Society for Schleswig-Holstein History) and the AK (Work Circle Economic and Social History SH). We are happy to report that up to now we have recruited 44 individuals for active participation in the AKVZ e.V. Nevertheless, we are looking for more volunteers. The immensity of data (some 4.5 million individuals over 8 census cycles - 1769, 1803, 1835, 1840, 1845, 1855, 1860 and 1864) simply requires the division of this project amongst a number of people. Our Danish friends gave us the example. Their 1803 census for Denmark is almost complete. Within their data bank more than 4 million individual data are already available on line. The former duchies Schleswig and Holstein (after that also Lauenburg and the county of Dithmarschen and the duchy of Luebeck) are still "blank spots on the map". Should you be interested in our project, please send us an e-mail at: mailto:K.P.Voss@T-Online.de Each new coworker will be added to our internal VZ (Census Register) mailing list. During the initial phase this entails the advantage that you are kept informed of our progress and can count on support from this group. In addition, we offer bi-weekly workshops in conjunction with the TV station OK Kiel as a steady support service. An on line forum, a quasi FAQ help line, round out this support service. Hi List, There is much interest in the availability of census records, but it is obvious that there are few transcribers and many census records to be done. How does one overcome this, perhaps members of this list could express their desire that certain areas be done with the encouragement that they will be a part of the effort. This may mean contacting other researchers who need the same census record transcribed and realise that there are available records for that place for a number of years eg 1803, 1835, 1840, 1845 & 1855. Offering to assist in the collecting of the records by hiring LDS films and paying for the hire, photocopying and postage, even where this is not directly available offering to finance someone who can do the hard work but does not have the financial means to do so. Advertising in your local area for someone who is able to read the old German script. this person obviously would need to be paid a fee for his or her work. I have been successful in hiring the film, paying for the photocopies, finding a lovely person in my neighbourhood who is able to transcribe the records and appreciates the money I pay him to do the work which supplements his pension and gives him a extra feeling of worth. Not being able to speak the German language has not been a obstacle to me. There are professional organisations and researchers that appear on this list who I am sure would offer suggestions, welcome assistance and encourage the means of when the transcription is finished a greater coverage to other researchers. I must make aware to readers that all this takes time and for them who do this to have patience. my friendly greetings Wayne Bunning researching the Neukirchen, Segeberg and Gleschendorf areas
