St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Blue Springs. These are the tombstones remaining in the cemetery. Since many of the folks buried here were disinterred and moved, the presence of a tombstone doesn't necessarily mean they are still there. 2. Wagon Trail Cemetery (Chrisman graveyard). Only two stones are there, but reportedly there are more burials. 3. Christ Lutheran in Hanover Twp. 4. Cortland Cemetery. 5. Dolen Cemetery. 6. Emmanuel Lutheran. 7. First Trinity Lutheran. 8. Dotty, It says that he is a worker in the town of Rhardum, Jever Parish. This place is actually in Ostfriesland. My map shows a village of Rahrdum (as spelled on the map) about 1 km south of the town of Jever. You can learn about Warfsmann, Colonists, etc. from the Ostfriesien Mailing List and associated websites. See their FAQ and/or search their list archives. Dennis -------------------------------------- Original Message: Hi, can anyone help me translate the following: "Arbeiter zu Rhardum, Parochie Jever". And also what is Warfsman and Warfbesitezer ? "Arbeiter zu Rhardum, Parochie Jever". Labourer at Rhardum, Parish of Jever. [Parochie is an somewhat old-fashioned expresson for "Kirchspiel" or "Pfarrei" = parish.] A 'Warf" is an artificial earthen mound upon which are constructed the farm buildings. There are some islands and low-lying areas at the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein which are not protected against the frequent floods. This is where "Warfen" are found, as the last line of defence against floods. There is nothing quite so dramatic as the roaring waves lapping at the "Warf" where house and barn stand, and where the farmer has taken all his livestock --- and not a sign of land all around. Thus, a "Warfsman" [should that be Warfsmann?] and the "Warfbesitezer" [should be Warfsbesitzer] is the owner of the Warf, and "ein Eigner einer alten Warfstatte" [the last a should be an Umlaut] is the owner of an old Warf. A "Colonist zu Zwischenbergen" is someone who colonized a place at Z. >From: "mpcole.sr" <mpcole.sr@prodigy.net> >Reply-To: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com >To: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [S-H-RTS] Translation help >Date: Wed, 29 Oct 2003 16:31:03 -0500 > >Hi, can anyone help me translate the following: > >"Arbeiter zu Rhardum, Parochie Jever". Hi Julie... For as long as I've been on this list, many messages come through to me with the weird characters. I inquired a while back, and was told it had something to do with being an AOL user. I can't explain it, but several other AOL users wrote to me saying they, too, would get the weird characters. I find it very annoying as it really breaks up the intent of a message, and sometimes is so convoluted that the message is incomprehensible! But no-one offered me any suggestions to compensate for or correct the occurrences, so I still get them. Sorry I couldn't help you, but thought I'd pass on what I was told! Jeanne

Hello listers, Mary Urban has written: I have just started doing some family research in Germany. I have narrowed my search down to the city of Schwerin/M Gr, Moor 23 (taken from a 1924 ship manifest) and the family name is Steinmann. When I began this search I was told to look at Schleswig-Holstein. I am totally confused as to the relationship of these two area. Are they one in the same? Are there any maps available which would show this house/street address? Where and how do I go about researching in this area for vital records? Thank you, Mary Hello Mary, here is how to get "unconfused" :-) Send a mail to this address with the just the word: subscribe in the main body of text. mecklenburg-l@genealogy.net Schwerin is one of the lager cities in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This is a modern day name for this state. In the time frame that you are searching it was a Grand Duchy and was called Mecklenburg-Schwerin. If you visit the following named site, you will get perhaps even more help. It is in both the German and English languages. http://ftp.math.uni-rostock.de/~mfp/ Cordially, Ralph Reimers, member, Verein für mecklenburgische Familien-und- Personengeschichte e.V. http://www.MFPeV.de http://www.MecklenburgKontakte.de
Hi, can anyone help me translate the following: "Arbeiter zu Rhardum, Parochie Jever". And also what is Warfsman and Warfbesitezer ? "ein Eigner einer alten Warfstatte? Colonist zu Zwischenbergen? Dotty Sprague Cole
Looking for any information concerning: Ernest WENDT b: 25 January 1844 Schleswig Holstein d: 1 February 1916 Lancaster County, Nebraska and wife Louisa (Kate) Pieper WENDT b: 8 January 1826 Schleswig Holstein d: 28 May 1906 Lancaster County, Nebraska. Louisa (maiden name ?Gorse/Gocse?) was married to ??W.F. (Wilhelm Fredrick??) or maybe H.F. PIEPER and they had children all born in Schleswig-Holstein (unknown town). Assume he died in Germany and Lousia (Kate) married Ernest Wendt there. Ferdinand b: 18 November 1854 d: 18 November 1909 Lincoln, Nebraska; Charles PIEPER b: 8 Dec 1859, d: 17 July 1912 in Omaha, Nebraska (My grandfather); Albert PIEPER b: 26 February 1865, d. 8 Dec 1944. There was also a daughter named Anna or Hannah dob unknown. Charles and Ferdinand appear in the United States on 1880 census in Nebraska. Have not found them on a passenger list definitely, but possible Charles arrived in 1880 on the Frisia from Hamburg. Ernest, Louisa (Kate), Albert, and Anna show up in 1885 on the Nebraska State census. Albert used the name WENDT until birth of his first child when he changed back to PIEPER. Thank you for any help. I have no other clues yet. Susan Leighton
