    2. Is "Hansestadt Lübeck" in Schleswig-Holstein? If so, what does the word "Hansestadt" mean? Is Lübeck a town or a region? If this is in Schleswig Holstein, where do I find the records of who lived there in 1852-1872? Thank you, Marlene South Dakota

    3. Lubeck....northeast of Hamburg....was a "free city" in the Hanseatic trading league. It's a very interesting place. Start with Familysearch.org.......I'm pretty sure the Mormons photographed church records there. John

    3. Susan.....I should also have mentioned that if you know the town in S/H....check for census records.....they are available for that period. Census records for S/H often give the entire family and also give you their date and place of birth. If you'll tell me the town you are interested I MIGHT be able to give you the film number. I used them a lot. John

    3. Connie, From which of the Van Hoose lines do you descend from? I descend from Jan Fransse Van Hoesen (Van Husum) through his son, Johannes. Then from Johannes down through his son, Johannes, and then through his daughter, Elizabeth Van Hooser who married Johannes "John" Hagler. If you e-mail me directly, I can give you quite a lot of info on the family, as I have a book published in 1993, and written by Joyce Lindstrom. The book is about 800 pages in length and has a fair amount off historical information on the very first of our generations of the family. Look forward to hearing from you, Sharon Hagler > -----Original Message----- > From: CAnder6241@aol.com [mailto:CAnder6241@aol.com] > Sent: Saturday, March 06, 2004 3:56 PM > To: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [S-H-RTS] Vanhoesen/Vanhoose Family > > My family originated (as far back as anyone can go) to Franz Jan > Vanhoesen...... > I guess my question is....does anyone have any info on that particular family. > They came to the states and have quite a few variations of the name....mine > being Vanhoose. 3. Susan, I have a copy of my ggg grandfather's christening record from Buesum (Nov. 1832). It has birth and christening date, both parents' names, where they were from, which child he was (i.e. second legitimate child), the 3 sponsors' names and, if female, who their husbands were and where they were from. 3. Hallo Don, Hello Janiece, I should have completed my explanation: oftenly the Truchsess came from the lower nobility (service-nobility) and the job sometimes was descended on the son: Erbtruchsess: erben=inherit The service-nobility arose in the early Middle Ages, sometimes it was possible to climb up into higher regions... mainly it was a poor nobility, but with a good fief these vassals had a good life. Hello again ,All i know is that one of my maternal ancestors was a kaiserlicher koeniglicher Truchsess and it was explained to me that that was a beamten adel title he also had a von in his name so that would explain administrator, he was an administrator of a castle in bohemia as far as i know.Sorry if i caused a confusion. 3. Thanks Michael If this was the case with my family, then I don't understand how my dad was getting inheritance checks from the time when my family gave up their castle and lands. Vassals don't have castles. Maybe the whole "Truchsess" has nothing to do with our family surname. I just did a search on persons who came to the US through Ellis Island on American Family Immigration, and my dad's name is not there. I know he came here to the US between 1927 and 1930. I checked under Trucks and all similar spellings. Does anyone know of another website with those records? I'm just getting further and further confused. 3. I've been doing German research (especially German nobility) for about 10 years and I don't ever recall coming across a title of Truchsess. Can you tell me what the equivalent English is? For example, Koenig is King, Koenigin is Queen, Graf is Count or Earl, Graefin is Countess. Or did you mean that Truchsess is a name, like von Buchwald or von Ahlefeldt, etc.? Assuming it is a title of nobility, how would one translate: Franz Eusebius, Graf Truchseß? Does this mean Franz Eusebius was given two titles -- Count and ?? Is Truchsess perhaps more common in Austria? 3. That's what I thought. But it's also a form of my maiden name. Now I'm starting to figure out how we came by that name. Instead of taking a new surname, my great great great grandfather must have used his title as our new surname. I'm sure he never even thought what a mess that would make in trying to trace our family history centuries later. I"d love to discover who my great great great grandfather was. Thank you.
