    1. Re: SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS-D Digest V04 #62
    2. Gary I saw your message on the Schleswig Holstein listserve. I think we have emailed before as my Kay line married Deitchler (Wilhelmina Kay and Fredrick Deitcher in about 1870) and their daughter Martha Deitchler married Theodore Schoening (I think in Mineola, Iowa about 1903). Any way the Kay line came from Lutjenburg. But I have not worked on the German origin yet. But I am definitely interested if I am correct that you are referring to the area of their origin? 3. I have to take issue with the slam of the Evangelical Church . I have found the charges for their services very reasonable for what is involved and received and they are not trying to gain converts. If you visit the actual church of interest you most probably will find them cooperative and it will only cost you for copies. The old German script is the major challenge for even some younger Germans but most probably there will be somone who can help you. Using the archives it no longer becomes a problem since they will furnish a typed copyas well as a photocopy. . I and several relatives have had nothing but excellent treatment from the individual churches and the archives. With the churches it is not unreasoanble to leave behind a donation. Doing things on the cheap does not mean you have to be cheap :-) If you use mail to contact a church you can always slip in some dollars. They may operate on the Euro but $ are more than welcome. I am sure the LDS is very appreciative of the fact that they were allowed to make copies. Salt Lake City is nice in the Winter but can be pretty blinking hot in the summer and then there are the air pollution and temperature inversion problems.A trip to Germany is more fun. 2. Hello, since my family came from Meldorf, I have been there and to surrounding areas on three occasions. Meldorf is a very hospitable town. However, I don't believe that you will be able to use the Evangelical Church Records. I believe that the Church has now perceived that these records are a way to make money. I found them most unaccomodating and controlling. However, you should know that the LDS Church has microfilmed these records to a certain point in time, and they are available for free review in Salt Lake City. You can also order these films at the closest Family History Center. It is quite a sight however to see these original books which go back several hundred years. With the microfilmed records (baptisms, marriages and deaths) I was able to trace my family back to the late 1500's. The Rathaus in Meldorf is also an excellent source of information. I was surprised at how much information was available, and I found them very accomodating. The Dom is beautiful! Meldorf is also beautiful in my opinion. I will never forget getting off the train our first time there with my wife and three children. It felt like coming back home to me, and my children were equally enthralled. 3. Is anyone researching Ströh or Boock? I have the following people: Jochim Friedrich Ströh and his wife Lisbeth (maiden name) Boock. I've tried to find them on the 1803 census but can't locate them. Maybe they weren't living yet. Their daughter, Dorothea Elisabeth Ströh, was born in 1818 in Hohenholm (as far as I know.) She was vaccinated in Luders in 1820. The family later lived in Sehestedt. I'm also researching Kühl of Goosefeld and Schmidt of Sehestedt. Any connections? Maggie

    3. My wife and I have motored over most of Germany and found acomodations with ease by going to the Tourist Bureaus which are usaully well marked and often very near the train stations. Even in what East Germany English is usually spoken and and we were usually sent to B&B s or small hotels where English was spoken. That is handy even if you do speak German as my wife does. There are some simple things ones Milwaukee upbringing does not prepare you for such as how to ask to have the tank filled (full machen). There are excellent maps available of many small towns as well as the large and topographic maps with a scale of about 1 km/imch are also available at a very reasonabble price. (even available on CD if you have a laptop). e-mail info@lgn.h.uunet.de (Lower Saxony) or shop@lverma.dvs-nrw.dbp.de (Nordrhein-Westfaledn) shop etc carries all Lander as well as topos. The various road atlases available are of varying quality. Try for Michelin since they seem to do a very good job along those lines. For Michelin Info go to ViaMichelin.com The better the atlas the better the gazzeteer. You might wish to obtain a Michelin green guide for Germany (in English) or Baedeker's Red travel guide (in English) Each has its strengths. The Michelin Red Guide Deutschland is very useful and is issued annually with places of lodging and eating; not just the pricey places. No foreign language required for use of the red guide. It show wherer all of the tourist bureaus are located on small maps. May is surely preferable to April (whoever wrote "April in Paris" had never been there then) and having my druthers I would opt for June. Amsterdam airport is easy to use and find when returning a rental car. Border formalities were non-existent in the 90's and one changed countries flawlessly . I only noticed I had left Holland by the color of the street signs :-) ... Things do not have to be pricey and buying bottled water, bread and sandwich makings allows one to have an impromptu picnic. The alcohol laws regarding driving are highly restrictive and one would be limited to less than 12 ounces of beer. In Berlin it was close to 6 ounces. Envious in Nova Scotia, Dave

    3. Bob; In 2000, we went to Germany in late Apr/early May and everything was beautiful-green with lots of flowers blooming. We started off in Southern Germany and worked our way up to Schleswig-Holstein. Since it's so far north, maybe mid May would be the best time. We landed in Frankfort, rented a car and drove all over, with very few problems. We avoided the autobahn, so were able to get a better feel of the country. When we were ready to stop for the night (late afternoon or evening) we started looking for Gasthouses. We had very little trouble finding accommodations to suit us. This may not be the most efficient use of time, but it worked out great for us. It was an unforgettable trip. Hope yours is, too.
