I've been reading S-H-Roots postings for some time now searching for anything suggesting a connection to my paternal ggfather, Albert Preuss, from Barend, near Schleswig, S-H. So far, no luck. But I did have to comment on the Maryann on Amrum whose maiden name was Block. . .my maternal gfather was Henry Block and this is the first time I've seen this name listed as well. He was said to have immigrated from Bremen, married Hulda Petzold, and lived out his days in Kansas City, MO. Maybe this will trigger something. Don Preuss in Oklahoma.
Hello, I am undertaking research for an exhibition on the photographer and police inspector, Paul Hinrich Matthias Foelsche, who arrived in Australia on the brig Reihersteig, reaching Adelaide on 26 October 1854. PHMF was born on 30 March 1831 at Moorburg, south of Hamburg, Germany. His parents were Matthias Foelsche and Anna Maria Magdalena Beenke. My question is whether any other list members know of this family, and in particular, can cast any light on their background in Moorburg. I understand that my best course may be to engage a professional researcher in Hamburg, and perhaps someone can advise me on how to go about that. My information tells me that Paul Foelsche served in the Prussian Hussars, probably around 1848-53, and I'd be particularly interested in tracing his military record as well. Many thanks, Dr Philip Jones, South Australian Museum, Adelaide

Hello, Is there anyone here researching the family names Withoefft, Witthoeft or Wittehovet ? My ancestors of this family came from the village Wik near Kiel. Hi - I am new to this list, so please excuse any mistakes that I may make. I recently learned my ggrandmother, Marie Jessen, immigrated March, 1880, was born in Husum. I have looked for a website for Husum, but have been unable to locate one. I am interested in an address for a protestant church or the location of records for her and her family. She was born 9 July, 1854. I have been told that the Jessen surname is concentrated in a relatively small area in the region that shifted between Denmark and Germany. Any suggestions are gratefully appreciated. Thank you. Karlyn Armstrong
My grandfather was Fred William Hartkopf who immigrated from Bergdorf, Schleswig-Hostein, Germany around 1903...He was the son of Frederick Heinrich Hartkopf and Johanna Wihe both of Bergdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. My grandfather died in 1936 in Ontario, San Bernardino County, California. He had a brother still living Herbert Hartkopf in Bergedorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany in 1968. Can anyone help me find more about Frederick Heinrich Hartkopf or Johanna Wihe. Fred Lloyd Hartkopf
According to Danish Emigration records, Frederik Julius CHRISTIANSEN was a Dane who lived in Altona, Schleswig, prior to emigrating to the U S in 1891 at the age of 27. He was a cabinetmaker by trade and soon after reaching the US was living in Atlanta, Georgia, with the German-speaking family of Jakob SCHRANK. I believe the SCHRANK family was from Baden before their emigration--also in 1890 and 1891. I surmise that Frederik and Jakob were acquainted in Altona prior to their emigration and am looking for any records I can find to support this. Also I would like to know if there were any apprenticeship records for that time period because I think that Frederik learned his trade there. Many thanks for any help, Carol Haycock in Denver, Colorado

I've had correspondence that some are having problems with this website. I tested yesterday and the site was not operating. This morning it's fine again. If you're interested please try again at a time not likely to be busy ie: early morning. Hope you enjoy! MARTI L WANGEN -----Original Message----- From: Marti L. Dear Tanya, I suggest that you see, if he can be found on the Hamburg Passenger Lists and in a lookup for you by someone, who has GERMANS TO AMERICA. The lists are indexed. There are the Direct Lists for those ships, which left from Hamburg and went directly to the port of arrival. Other ships sailed to another port before the port of arrival and these are known, as Indirect Lists. These can be ordered at your nearest Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Also, there is a web site for the lists online, where they search these for a fee. These lists will provide you with an individual's last residence in Germany. Good luck in finding him. Karla NurnbergGet more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com

I am looking for information on Christian Heinrich LAUSEN who was b. abt. 1823 in Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein. I have no idea who his parents may have been or about any brothers or sisters, either. He immigrated in 1857 on the Hampden and settled in Galveston, TX, where he lived until his death in 1891. If you have any further information this individual and/or hisr families, please get in touch! Sincerely, Tanya Austin, TX
Hi Group, My grandfather was 9 years old when he immigrated with his family in 1913. Did children in S-H start school at 6 yrs. old back then, and if so, does anyone know the name/address of the school he would have attended (1910-1913) if he lived in Bolbruegge or Nanndorf (near Oldenburg)? Thank you for the help! Julie Ploehn-Vigna
Liebe Heimat- und Familienforscher, in Brandt/Wölfle, Nordmark-Atlas, Schleswig-Holstein Geschichte und Leben in Karten und Bildern, Kiel 1929 gibt es auf Seite 59 eine Karte über polit. Einteilung Schleswig-Holsteins in der 2. Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Dear Group: The list seems a little slow right now so I thought this would be a good time to thank everyone that has responded to my call for help on the Giekau Church district workshop to be held in Mineola, Iowa, June 26.2004 at the Mineola Community Center. I have received pictures, maps, passenger list, census for the area, pedigree charts and a few misc. items so far, and would like to thank everyone for their help. To date we have a list of 32 researchers working on 34 plus surnames from the Giekau area. Last night we had the first meeting with the 1/2 Platt Players (half the group speaks Plattdeutsch and half doesn't) to put the skit together and what a bunch to work with. We had fun. We are going to reenact a day in Mineola farm life circa 1882. We could use a good Platt. song if anyone knows one. Hard core genealogy work will be done in the morning (limited to genealogist) The afternoon will have the skit, History of Schleswig/Holstein, History of Giekau Church area, Gut Panker and Gut Neuhaus history and the story of the 1688 witch burning at Satjendorf.(some Mineola surnames were involved) That is what we have so far and Thanks again for your help. have a good one, Gary
