    1. Part 2 - Early Immigration from the Probstei
    2. Klaus Struve
    3. Dear members of this list, here comes the second half of my posting. I transcribed and summarized an article from a newspaper of the year 1846. It is not an exact translation, but it will give you at least 90 % of all information that it holds. I pasted the complete article into my website www.rootdigger.de , you will find it when you click the button "People" and then scroll down a bit. Most of the persons mentioned below are featured in more detail in my database "Emigrants", also accessible at : www.rootdigger.de I wish everyone a restful Sunday, with greetings from the "Old Country", Klaus Struve, Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein (genealogical researcher) Preetzer Wochenblatt Nr. 24, Sonnabend, den 13. Juni 1846 (Preetzer Weekly Magazine, number 24, of Saturday, 13th June, 1846) [summarized by Klaus Struve, www.rootdigger.de] page 281 : Of the Probstei, belonging to the monastery in Preetz : The Emigration to America Apart from these 15 of the parish Schoenberg, there were 7 more from the parish Probsteierhagen : 16-18) Hinrich Wiese, tailor from Lutterbek, with his wife and a child 19-21) Asmus Viet, shoemaker from Prasdorf, a brother of the above-mentioned, with his wife and a daughter, 10 years old 22) his (Asmus') brother-in-law Claus Arp from Laboe. All of these are heading for Iowa, where they hope to buy land, or, the craftsmen amongst them, expect to find a good income, without buying land. They left the 16th May from Hamburg, arrived safely in Hull, and on the 23rd, set off for Quebec. From there, they will travel on the St. Lorenz River, the Great Lakes, and finally the Mississippi River, that will lead them to their countrymen in Iowa. Our best wishes are sent to accompany those who are leaving, and we extend them to those who have already arrived in America. May none of them nourish sanguine hopes, and may none of them build castles in the air ! May they take along with them into the New World the diligence they know, and the good habits and moral values of their native land. May they not forget the saying that is valid in Holstein as well as in America : “In the sweat of your brow, you shall eat your bread.” And may forthcoming generations give testimony of this. Postscript : With the last group of Probsteiers traveled, from outside the Probstei : 1-6) the farm-tenant Schroeder from Matzwitz, with his wife and four children 7-10) his brother-in-law, Scheel, fisherman from Todendorf, with his wife and two children 11, 12) his [whose ? Schroeder ? Scheel ?] aged parents-in-law. These people took along with them a considerable sum of money that will enable them to purchase a good deal of land. So it is a total of 49 persons so far who have left the north-east of Schleswig-Holstein for the transatlantic mainland – a remarkable process in the life of our people, whose hearts and minds are touched and excited, and, should the news from abroad continue to be favorable, will entail a much bigger one of its’ kind.

    3. Hi Gloria, been a long time since we heard from each. When I read "Grimwald" it reminded me with the name Greifswald, a city at the baltic sea in Pommern. Perhaps can you put a scan online? Maybe one of this list can help to decipher it. 3. Hi June, thats not correct what you wrote: Lolland is indeed an danish island in the baltic sea just north of the Schleswig-Holstein island of Fehmarn. You have to cross Lolland when you drive on the Motorway from Hamburg and Luebeck north to the danish capital Copenhagen - and Maribo is a town on this road to Copenhagen. Denmark is divided into 13 districts/counties ( called Amt ) and and 271 municipalities (kommuner). Lolland in southeast Denmark, forms with the islands of Zealand, Mn, Falster and some minor islands the storstroems amt. Maribo is a municipality in south Denmark, in the county of Storstrm. The municipality covers an area of 154 km, and has a total population of 11,135. Danish volunteers (and the Schleswig-Holsteiners of e.g. the AGGSH www.aggsh.de ) are still progress in typing the danish censuses 1769, 1801 /1803*, 1835*, 1840, 1845*, 1850, 1855*, 1860* and 1864* village by village and Name by name into a database which is online available at http://ddd.dda.dk/ . The * indicates that there are some of the Schleswig-Holstein censuses available too, but at the moment we have far less entries in the database than our danish friends. We are glad to find more helping hands. 3. I am trying to find the birthplace of my grandfather, Peter PETERSEN, who emigrated to New Zealand, probably about 1880. His parents were Carl Hansen Petersen and Ingeborg ANDRESEN. Carl and Ingeborg appeared on the Carlum Census for 1860, Carl being a carpenter. Peter was stated as having been born in Carlum, aged 4. He was born 6 September 1856. On his naturalisation papers in New Zealand Peter said he was born in Flensborg, and with his will was an affidavit signed by his two eldest sons stating that he was born in Maribo on the Island of Lolland. When I discovered that, there was no one alive from the family to answer my questions. Peter married Anna Catherina NIELSEN in Greytown, New Zealand, 11 March 1882. She also came from SCH-HOL but I do not know whether they knew each other when in Denmark. On the birth certificate of one of their sons they both said they were born in Carlum. 2. Dear Gloria Fay, As a start, dial up familysearch.org. On the opening page, go to the first column under "Features" and click on "Search for your ancestors in our vast record collection." Then you can enter such information as you have in the form provided. In my case, I got a huge number of references under the name Schrein I am researching. This service is provided free of charge by the LDS, or Church of the Latter Day Saints who seek to gather and provide genealogical information sufficient for us all to trace our ancestry back to Adam and Eve (if you live that long! I certainly will not.) Note that there has been some difficulty between SCH-HOL and the LDS relative to microfilming the documents. Ultimately, it seems one has to discover where ancestors originated in SCH-HOL before obtaining further info. I'm in a similar dilemma. But, never say die!! Best of good luck in your efforts. Bill Jones.

    3. A neophyte in this branch of research. On the subject of Schleswig-Holsteiners typing the Danish censuses....a question...on http://ddd.dda.dk what villages would one look for. All I know of our ancestor is that he came from Schleswig, so I know I will have to go village by village in the 1855/60/64 censuses to find him. It would be helpful to know the names of the villages I should look for. Thank You. "E"

    3. Erfde is directly West of Rendsburg. Records go back to 1768.....but I don't think LDs has ever filmed them. In S/H they have been reluctant to let LDS film records.....but my experience is from 25 years ago and things may have changed. My suggestion would be that you locate the Danish census records for that area....they have a tremendous amount of information on them. They were made from 1805-1855. jdbentz@prodigy.net

    3. Pommern is now part of the state (lander) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern which was at one time part of Prussia. It lies to the east of S-H. The only Grunwald listed in the Red Guide of Micheline for Germany is in Bavaria very near Munich., there is a Grunwalde near Dresden in the Lander of Saxony. There is a city called Grimmen in M-Vorpommern on highway 194 considerably east of Rostock. For the most rlaibale source of information on places in Germany I suggest you get an interlibrary loan of a gazeteer published by the US Department of Geography, 3 volumes which covers both E and W Germany in extremely fine detail. I have yet to find an automap/atlas of guide which has sufficient detail to locate many plaes in Germany. The USDG (probably CIA) books list brooks, large fams and all places of any concentrated inhabitation as well as mountains hill, lakes, etc. etc. The map coordinants are given in degrees and minutes. For those wishing precise mapping information you can purchase CD Rom disks of the various lander through shop@lverma.dvs/nrw.dbp.de .They also sell maps The people there can handle English requests but the CDs do not come with English directions although the downloading protocols are straight forward and MS OS systems compatible. It just takes a little bit of bravery and a small dictionary to know what the boxes you have to click upon correspond to in English. I managed it on the first try and mein Deutsch ist schrecklich. 2. Dear Gary, Boy, that was prompt! I'm really grateful for your promptness and the names. My basic problem is that the name Schrein, even in present day Germany is extremely rare. That has surprised me; I thought there would be at least a few thousand. In fact there are about 150 in total, 78 of which (the males) I have with zips and tel nos. But it's also encouraging. If there are that few, any Schrein I track down is likely a member of the clan. And, there may be more Schreins in the USA now, than in Germany. Continuing research will decide. Meanwhile, if you ever see a Schrein reference, anywhere, any time, please give me a hearty shout. Gratefully, Bill Jones.
