You can find German emigration records at www.rootdigger.de. It's in English but the records are in Microsoft Word format, there is a free Word viewer available on the Microsoft website. Another great site for newbies is Cyndi's List at www.cyndislist.com. As a newby to German genealogy, I'm hoping somebody can get me started in tracing my gggrandfather's family. He was Simon Michael Hayman and emigrated to Bristol, UK in the 1830's. What census records exist for Holstein? Are there any emigration records? I believe he was of Jewish faith. Any help would be gratefully received. Alan
About 50k northwest of Hamburg there is an Itzehoe which would be in Schleswig. I am unable to open the jewishgen website this morning to check to see if one in is in Holstein. It is located on highway A23. ----- Original Message ----- From: "KEN'S E-MAIL" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 22, 2008 9:36 AM Subject: Re: [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] Hayman Family in Holstein > Just another newbie. > > Julie, do you have any information on Holstein? Claus Hinrich is usually how it is spelled in the census. Do you have any other family names, in the bible, to give you some clues? I see he named his son Charles H. - so there is a good probability his father was Claus Hinrich also. good luck in your search! ktzmem Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. According to a family Bible he was born 18 Nov 1841 in Denmark (Schlesing Holstein). According to US census records he came to America between 1856 and 1859. He fought in the Civil War with a regiment from New York. He married Hannah Gee - originally from England. They settled in New Jersey. Am trying to find immigration records and anything about his family, parents, etc. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The earliest known wintjen in our line was Heinrich or Henry who was in his 50s on the 1841 census. He seems to have died a few years later.Unfortunately the census only says he was foreign and gives no clue to his place of birth.Henry/Heinrich was the publican of the Prince of Orange public house in Fieldgate street Whitechapel. His son George was Mary Anne Jane Wintjens father. My mother came to New Zealand in the early 1950s and brought Minnie Janes photo album with her as well as various other photos.Minnie died in the late 1940s.Percival Ellett came to New Zealand around the time of the first world war.We have had some contact with that branch of the family. His granddaughter was my teacher when I was about 8.I have also had some contact with Ernests son George. He is about 80 now and has done a lot of research. We have an old photo on glass of Mary ann with Minnie and one of the boys as a baby Als! o a photo of Ada as a baby and a death or in memoriam notice for Mary ann jane and one for Ada.I have a photo in front of me that I believe is either Herbert or William taken in Stones studio in stratford London.Someone has written age 18 on the bottom.Do you know if there are any photos in existence of Mary Annes husband William?I will send you copies of any photos you want. There is what we think is a wedding photo of Herbert or William jr.My mother is in England at the moment so I will have to wait a few weeks for access to some of them Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
