Author: doughartley137 Surnames: Nelsen Nelson Flindt Beneke Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.ceeurope.germany.schleswig.general/6172.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Tanya, that is very interesting. The Nelsens are variously described in Australian records as being of German / Prussian or Danish origin. And you may know that they called their home in Uralla 'Altona', presumably after a place in Germany / Denmark that was close to their heart. And Altona, whilst now absorbed into the German city of Hamburg, was originally founded by Danes as a Danish port in competition with Hamburg and was part of Denmark - as was all of Schleswig-Holstein. I also suspect a connection to a place called Bloomdale, or Blumenthal. Interesting that the Nelsens and Benekes appear to come from almost neighbouring localities. Please let me know if you ever come across a woman called ALIRME FLINDT in your research. She is recorded in a will as a niece of Henry Nelsen and may be a clue to the Nelsen origins. 1. [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] See Rootdigger listing for him / LIEBERG of Flensburg
    2. Barbara Petura
    3. Hello Tricia, Friedrich Heinrich Julius Lorenz LIEBERG, photographer, is listed among those who emigrated from Schleswig-Holstein, on the excellent Rootdigger Website for SH. See here: http://www.rootdigger.de/ If you haven't already, go to the site, and click on Emigrants from the menu at the bottom. On that page, click on the letter L and wait while the very large listing of people, surname starting with L, loads. Scroll down and you will find a brief entry for Friedrich Heinrich Julius LIEBERG, born in 1862, a photographer, whose destination was recorded as USA and Denmark. The name, age and occupation match, so likely this is the person you are seeking. This also means that genealogist Klaus Struve, who has built this remarkable Web site, likely knows more a bit about this individual and also how to get everything you are looking for. He has done excellent research for me, for a reasonable fee, obtaining the text of the original German record and providing the English translation as well, from the Lutheran church records. His contact information is on the site. Others on the list will be better at helping you determine how to write to Flensburg for records, if you prefer to do it yourself. Best wishes, Barbara ________________________________ From: P Hunt <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, October 23, 2008 7:34:49 AM Subject: [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] LIEBERG of Flensburg Hello Listers, Newbie here with no knowledge of Continental research at all........HELP!   I am wanting to find the birth, parentage and hopefully siblings of Friedrich Heinrich Julius Lorenz LIEBERG. 3. Hi Geoffrey, I'm like a fish out of water as I usually do Gloucestershire Genealogy. I've no idea if Flensburg 'bred' photographers by the dozen!!! I bet they did just to confuse us. If you Google in 'photoLondon' and see the 19th century photographers database you may find your gggrandfather there.
