Joanie, I would also recommend Klaus Struve as thorough, straightforward, and very helpful. In an e-mail conversation recently, I learned that he is also a member of the American Schleswig/Holstein Society in Walcott, IA. He is a professional genealogist, which is one of the reasons you should expect to pay at a professional level, but also, if he has to travel in your behalf, the cost of gasoline in Europe makes U.S. prices look like Wal-Mart vs. Nieman-Marcus. Also your researcher could send you a PayPal charge and then you could pay through Pay Pal which does the conversion from US to Eurodollars. This worked for me with a billing from England. My researcher is Schleswig-Holstein did the conversion and then asked for a personal check in the 'adjusted' amount" which I just mailed to him. I assume he just deposited it in his bank account. Foreign research can be more expensive than you might expect, but understand that the researcher is a professional who works for an hourly fee, and must pay things like archive admittance fees, photocopying or photography of original records, travel/petrol costs, parking fees, etc. All the researchers I've used have been very good about detailing these costs in the estimate and final invoice. It wouldn't hurt to ask for an estimate to see whether you can afford a researcher's services. I got about twenty records for $400 in Schleswig-Holstein, and this information was vital to verify a particular connection between my immigrant ancestors and their births in Leck. But your needs may be far less and the costs could be much lower. Regards, Debra http://sakionline.net/familypage

Ask your researcher for an estimate by outlining what you would like to find, or tell your researcher that you're willing to spend (say) $300 but not above that for now and ask how much research that would allow. All the researchers I've used (including Klaus Struve, who I can also recommend) have been very good about sticking to their original estimates. Most major U.S. banks can wire money to foreign banks. You need your researcher's SWIFT number (a bank routing number) and some banks can wire funds in foreign currency, such as Euros. There's a fee for the wire of about $30 usually, which you'll pay on your end. Some records are unavailable in the U.S. and hiring a researcher is the only way to find out details held in the original archives. Regards, Debra http://sakionline.net/familypage

Liebe Grüße an alle Gotthard
