And yes, his mother's name was Catharina. He was of illegitimate or premarital birth. And yes, his last known residence before leaving Germany was Dellstedt in Dithmarschen. I agree with Barbara that the passenger manifest she found must be the one of your ancestor. He is found as wanted by the military authorities for not showing for military service on my website : www.rootdigger.de along with a solid quarter of the estimated 250,000 persons who left Schleswig-Holstein for overseas destinations between 1830 and 1930. Not sure how this would translate to English. More interesting, however, is that he said on his passport application that he was born about 31 December 1873 and he arrived about 15 November 1889 from Hamburg on a ship that seems to be Normanne. Using the immigration records, there is a Johann Frahm, age 16, who arrived 17 Nov 1890 from Prussia on the ship Normannia. The ship's record shows where the passengers hailed from or started from, and Johann is recorded as from Dellstedt. And Dellstedt is described [Wikipedia, German version] as a village north of highway 203 between Heide and Rendsburg in Dithmarschen, Holstein, Germany. On this map, see Rendsburg to the east, Heide to the west and Dellstedt exactly as described, north of highway 203: http://www.geoco.org/germany/Dellstedt/en_54.23_9.37.php Some of my ancestors are from just NE of Heide. I think this is likely to be your John Frahm. Let us know what you think. Barbara Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I can't quite make out the "place of birth". Looks like "Hoben ber Rendsburg, Germany"... or perhaps "Huber der Rendsburg. I've attached the document so some of you can take a look. Isn't Rendsburg in Schlewig Holstein? I'm hoping I can locate more information on his family. Supposedly his parents were John and Catharine (or maybe a Johann and Catharina) Frahm. He was born Dec. 31, 1873. Married a Louise Ortlepp in New York city, and died in 1910 (after getting kicked in the head by a horse). Thank you for your insight into his place of birth. Spelling of their surname has been an issue in tracking them down. They must have traveled in rough seas, as the "u" flipped upside down and they were recorded as Guthan in New York City when they arrived in 1852. Census takers had trouble with the heavy German accent and they have been recorded as:Gthoner,Goodthour, and Juhan. To make things worse, the family was poor and they saved some money on the grave marker by dropping the "u". (:-) Seriously, THANK YOU! Danke schön!
