This is regarding the birth place of Asmus Diedrichsen/Diederichsen. He was born in April 1807. He became a Lutheran pastor and then came to America where he settled in Milwaukee. I have two sources to help, they read: 1) born in Gunnebye Parish, Ulsnisensis in Anglia Slesvicensi... 2) born in the village of Gunneby, in the parish of Alsen, in Schleswig... I see there is an island called Alsen, but the maps I have looked at do not show a village on the island with a spelling close to Gunneby. I would appreciate any help, Thanks. 1. Re: [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] Village Help
    2. Greetings Tom, In my mapbook, there is a town named Ulsnis, and another named Ulsnisland, both just to the NE of the city of Schleswig, all on the Schlei (water channel going inland in a SW direction from the Ostsee). Nearby, also on that water channel, is the town of Gunneby. If you find Schleswig (city) on your map and follow the water channel (river? deep bay?) NE to the city of Kappeln near the mouth of the channel into the Ostsee, you will have passed by the towns in this order, Ulsnisland, Ulsnis, Gunneby--all of them are closer to Schleswig than to Kappeln. Angeln (Anglia?) is the name of the area protruding into the Ostsee/on the N side of the Schlei where these towns are found. (On the south side of the Schlei/N of Eckernfoerde (city) is Schwansen.) Can you find some or all of these towns and other features on your map? Hope this helps. 1. [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] Rasmus Giessing/Gjessing
    2. Reina
    3. Hello Listers, I like to come back to my question about Søren Rasmussen Giessing/Gjessing 's background born around 1700 presumably in Denmark, later living in Eastern Norway, near Grimstad, between about 1730- 1763. He died as a shipscaptain in 1763 at a journey from Kristansand to Dublin ( age unknown). I have asked this question before in time about his background at this list, around 2006. I have had many answers and could find a lot of persons named "Giessing/Gjessing" back in Denmark and in Norway. But never found back the familybackground of this Søren Rasmussen Giessing/Gjessing. Except from one probaterecord in Skanderborg, in which "a" Rasmus Rasmussen in Skanderborg købstad, son of Rasmus Hansen i Gjesing, has been mentioned in 1695. But after this moment this son Rasmus Rasmussen (Gjesing) was never mentioned again and not before in time in Skanderborg (not in earlier in censes and never in churchbooks later in time, in that area etc). It looks like Søren Rasmussen's family came from Skanderborg, but never (his father) "a" Rasmus Giessing could be found back at these regions before abt. 1700. Not married, no probaterecord, never a son Søren in combinatin with a father's name Rasmus Giessing etc. Now a new hypothesis is that the father Rasmus Giessing left Skanderborg country between abt. 1680-1700, working in the army, also because of the Great Northern War, which started at Februar 1700 . I know this war has been started in februar 1700 (located esp. at the Baltic sea, near Poland and Russia. And in Schleswig-Holstein). Because I know this list is international and send also messages to other countries: I like to ask the following question: Is there somewhere a 'Rasmus Giessing/Gjessing" or some name like that: "Gjersing. Jersing etc" in time between about 1680-1710 mentioned in any churchrecord at the Baltic Sea or in Schleswig-Holstein as a father of a child bapisted or a person with this name married somewhere in these regions, outside former Denmark around 1680-1710? . Did anyone saw this name somewhere in that timeframe 1680-1710 in marriagerecords f.e. as a best man or in a deathrecord in Poland, at the Baltic sea area or in Schleswig-Holstein? I am thinking of towns like Flensborg, Schleswig etc at the part of the Baltic Sea. The presumed wife' s name of this Rasmus Giessing/.Gjessing (maybe married between about 1680-1710) might have had the christian name: Christine Margrethe or Kirstine Margrethe. And I know that this christian name Christine Margrethe was more frequent at these areas in parishes around the Baltic sea. and in former Sønder Jylland (Nowdays Schleswig-Holstein=Germany) Thanks for your assistance Reina
