    1. [SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-ROOTS] Weise and Müß Families
    2. Gaycha & Ed Mayhew
    3. I have a Weise family who came over from Selent, Hans and Margareth Weise and had 2 children Emma and Carl. I think that Margareth died and Hans went back to Germany. I have the quit claim deed to land in MN that was sold to Emma and noterized by Hans and his wife Anna from Fargau. Emma lived in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. I could never find her parents in Davenport in the Census. Her brother Carl was in western Iowa until he got TB, then returned to Davenport and died. I have a booklet called "The Muhs Families of the Midwest" by Merle E. Arp which gives insite into life in the Probstei area and some history of the area. I know Selent and Fargau were just outside the Probstei boundries but they probably lived similarily. In the book he states that the Muhs of Davenport, Sheridan Township and North Dakota all descended from a line of landless cottage workers in the village of Wisch. Would Ms or Mr. Freundenberg please email me at [email protected] Gaycha Mayhew in Davenport, IA

    2. There is lots of information on these surnames from the Probstei area of Schleswig-Holstein on FHL microfilm #1181853 "Probsteier Geschlecterbuch" by Guenter Fincke. If you go online to the Mormon website, familysearch.org, you can find the Family History Center nearest you. Go there, order the microfilm from Salt Lake; when it arrives, study it at the Family History Center. I learned lots about my husband's lineage from this 'film. You don't have to be a Mormon--I'm not. Good luck. 3. Stephen, 1. colonists were settlers from mainly the south of Germany who were called into the duchy Schleswig to make bogs and heathland arable, and they came in trecks between 1760 and 1765. But also people of Mecklenburg and other parts of Schleswig or Holstein settled. They received land for free, seedcorn, tools, timber, firewood, interest free loans, and some animals. The task they were expected to do was a hopeless one, and many fled once they realized what they were in for. 2. Abnehmer : a retired person, mainly someone who has formerly owned land or a cottage and has handed it over to the younger generation. 3. Anna Catharina J. was apparently the daughter of a daughter of Jacob Diederich S. and a man called Juergensen. 4. no apparent relationship between the Abnehmer and Hinrich Grehn. Johanna Schoel came to America in 1881 (ship's passenger list) with son, Andrew John, his wife and two children. I haven't discovered exactly when the other 4 sons came. Years ago, I met and talked with the Martha Michaels you mention. She was full of information, especially of the Schoels that lived in Birmingham, and I took many notes. I recently joined Ancestry so I could prove some of this information. I know Martha's daughter-in-law and plan to call her to see if she or her husband have family info. I'm also in contact with the grandson of Herman and we're trading information. The youngest son, Fredrick John, had 3 children: Eleanor, Elizabeth, and Frank M. Eleanor married Howard Johnson - 3 children: Howard, Eleanor, and Russell. So we are sharing some of the same information. I am particularly glad to learn these other names - Bube, Krause, Fischer. I haven't yet figured out how to learn more about the Schoels before they came over here. I have been told that there is a living schoel who has been back to Germny to find family. I must touch base with him. Please keep in touch. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
