I wonder if the Margarete you write about is my great grandmother. Sounds likely doesn't it? She would have had a son and daughter, Helen and Nickolas of Warjasch. Your explanation of the last names may be why I never could find Magarete and Helen on the Ellis Island records. I have never heard of her grandson Nick before or a sister of Helen. If you are able (and willing) to post a picture I'd be very grateful to see it. There used to be a family bible in the house I grew up in but it disappeared at some point. Too bad, I've been told it had some family history recorded in it, written in German. Still hope it will turn up someday in someone's attic. I will try to get copies of a few pictures of Helen and my grandfather Nickolas but it may take time. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Her Mother was Margarete Nussbaum, who emigrated to the US with her 12 year old Grandson, Nick in 1923 or so. This was sometime after the death of her husband. You can find her on the Ellis Island site as Schur. There was also a sister to Nick and Helen. I do not know her name but I have recently found some information that Helen's name may have been a nickname for Magdalena. This Magda Walter (widow) from Varjias/Warjasch was escorting a child to the U.S. in 1912 to his Father, Istvan or Stefan Godo and he is listed as her Brother in Law. Perhaps the sister died in Europe before her husband could send for her? I have a picture of Mr and Mrs Scheer and Helen and her first husband Mr. Walter and two sons from Europe. She was born about 1852 in Bavaria, Germany. She married John Scheer and last lived in Madison County, Nebraska. She died sometime between 1887 and 1900. I'm trying to discover when she died and what her maiden name was so that I can attempt to trace her family. Her daughter Clara Scheer Nathan was my great grandmother. Hi Glenda, We do have the name of Gotlieb in our family. I dug out a little info. Johann B. Scheer (John) born in 1812, His wife Maria (Mary) and beside the name I have written Catharine with a ?. She was born 1813. They had 7 children. Heinrich Born 1842, Elise born 1845, Wilhelm born 8/11/1850 - I have a note to get his Birth Certificate - He was also the twin to my great grandmother - Christina Marie born 8/11/1850, died 6/25/1917, buried in Big Springs, Mo at St. James Cemetery. She married A. Friederick H. Hillebrand. Then there was Garrett born 1853, Louise born 1854 and Lewis born 1856. This was found in Warren Co. census. This is our great grandmother Hillebrand's family. We have Bahr's , Hildebrand and Beckmann names in our family. If any of this helps let me know.
