Dear Suzanne, The book, "Greenwood County Sketches: Old Roads and Early Families", by Margaret Watson, Attic Press, 1982, gives some information about Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church. (Now called Rock Church.) Pages 75-78 Under the sub-heading, "Presbyterian Beginnings" (Citing as source, Howe's "History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina," published 1870.) Possibly the oldest organized church in the county. A communion service was conducted at Rocky Creek in the fall of 1771, according to Howe. The name was changed from Rocky Creek to Rock Church in 1844. First built as a log building, replaced with a frame building which burned in 1959. Replaced in 1960 with a rock building on the same spot. Became dormant in 1906, revived in 1956. Located on the north side of Hwy. 72, about 2.5 miles east of Greenwood. Original location not definitely known. Tradition says it was first constructed on an enormous flat rock which was partially the floor and foundation.
