Looking for info./verification of the history of EDITH LIGON(3rd gr. grandmother), b. 1809(?), Laurens Co.(?) d. 8 Apr. 1871, Huntsville, Ala. - Parents- Robert Ligon b 1786 ???/ Ester Alexander b. 1790 ??? EDITH LIGON married Benjamin Lewis Goodman (1798-1866) on 8 December 1826-they were living in Tyler, Texas (Smith Co.) by 1853. In the 1860 Smith Co., Texas (Tyler) census Benjamin Lewis Goodman was listed as the guardian of a ROBERT LIGON, age 18, $10,000 R.E. value and $51,000 personal value. He was attending school in 1860. He then enlisted, was captured and released and died soon after the end of the war(?). Benjamin Lewis Goodman died intestate and I have located a letter, written in August 1866, from his son-in-law, George W. Chilton, requesting the 'administrator' to sell some land to help EDITH LIGON GOODMAN-as she had no money. Can anyone help me with info. about this EDITH LIGON- father/mother/siblings? Also, ---ROBERT LIGON --How was he related? Possibly the nephew of Edith- in 1860 she was 51 and he 18. And then there is the question of Robert's wealth-at age 18. Would really like help on this. ANY help would be appreciated!! Many thanks George Rice 2/179A Nile St. East Nelson New Zealand 64-3-545-9123 gbr@actrix.gen.nz

I am looking the parents of, or any information about MARSHALL CLARKE. He was born c1836, and was living in the household of my gg-grandfather John Baylis CLARKE, Jr , born c1824 and his family in the 1860 Anderson Co. SC census. John Baylis Clarke, Jr. was listed as a merchant tailor and Marshall was listed as a tailor. I feel certain that MARSHALL CLARKE is a relative of my CLARKE family in Anderson, SC. Finding his identity and his relationship to my Anderson, SC Clarkes would go a long way toward determining the ancestry of John's father John Baylis CLARKE, Sr., born c1791in SC. I am looking for CLARKES from the mid-atlantic states who were tailors, a CLARKE who may have married a MARSHALL or amy information about a Marshall CLARKE born in the 1836 time frame. Any clues or information will be truly appreciated. Susan Clark Johanson -- Susan C. Sorry for the redundancy to the lists, but FYI for you Saluda, Edgefield, Newberry, Greenwood researchers... I just learned from a message that << my mother and I visited Maysons Memorial Cemetary in November of this year (1999) and they now have a sign up with that name. My mother has always known it as Good Hope Baptist, the church is across the street from the cemetary.>> Does this mean that just the part across the street is now MMC, or is the whole church cemetary now MMC? Makes sense, in that it is a Maysons Crossroads, but I'd love clarification on which part or both! Thanks, Bonnie Butler

Hi! I am new to the list and hope that I can crack a brick wall that has puzzled me for years. Does anyone have any information about a Henry TAYLOR, possibly Henry W. TAYLOR, who was born in South Carolina in 1787, moved to Alabama, married (at least, a second time) Rosannah KELLY (from Orangeburg District), in 1848, and settled in Monroe County, AL? I feel sure that he had a brother named Hiram, possibly a sister named Catherine, possibly brothers OR sons (from a first marriage) who were named Thomas, Ward, and Martin. Ever hear of this family? The father's name might have been John TAYLOR. Thanks for any information you might have. Kathryn kauzgr@aol.com

I am seeking more about the BANES family and their relations (FREEMAN, BRIDGES, SEYMOUR, BOGGERO, LITTLE) around Spartanburg, Laurens and Greenwood SC. Below are synopses of SSDI info I received this week. I do not know if/how they fit together. George BANES and Mary Alice FREEMAN must be the _ BANES and Alice A. BANES [b. Jan 1888], per the census data below. However, if that is the case, then George BANES, far above, also married a Neeley SEYMOUR and a Mary Alice FREEMAN?? (There could have been a brother named George BANES who was out of the home by the 1900 census, but died early and his brother married his widow and they had a son named George?) I will go to the Archives in the coming weeks to look in Laurens (the Laurens birthplace being absolutely new data to me!) and at the 1870 census. Passing this riddle along to better minds....
