    3. Mr. Bailey. Tabernacle was at one time a community - I don't know whether the community developed around the Church or vice versa. It was a Methodist Church/community with an accademy. The Church has long been gone but the cemetery is still there and, I believe, maintained by the Greenwood County Historical Society. I have not lived in the Greenwood area in years but still visit there occasionally. My info is based largely on memory and its accuracy may be questioned but I think is reasonably correct. I hope this helps. Buck Free

    3. Just sending this on. -----Original Message----- From: ncpressley@mindspring.com [mailto:ncpressley@mindspring.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2000 11:09 AM To: LONGCANE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Genealogy of John Barnwell, 1704-1880 Hello, South Carolina I was rummaging through one of my used book stores in Virginia this week and located a book that is of no personal interest to me, but would be a treasure to the right person. It is a fold-out chart of the genealogy of John Barnwell, 1704-1880, by Barnwell Rhett Heyward, A.B., L.L.B. It is a hard-cover book, the chart is printed on what appears to be heavy parchment paper. I found no date anywhere on this book, and it consists only of a raised family crest in full color (motto: Malo Moriquiary Foedari) and a very large fold-out genealogy. (If I recall it folds out into 9 or 12 oversize pages.) The book shop owner is asking $90.00 for it, but whispered to me that "we could talk." Please email me if this is something anyone might be interested in. Thanks, Nancy Pressley

I believe it is Tabernaacle Cemetary. The grave of Civil War Brigidere General Nathan Evans is there, and the grave of one of my ancestors is there as well. He was the first person buried in this cemetary and he died in the Revolutionary War. I do not know his name but my ggrandmother is from there and she was Sally Davis, who married James Poole of Greenville, S.C. Anything will be appreciated. Thank you, E.H.B.

    2. Judith G. Brabham
    3. Hello, Forgive my repetitive cross-postings, but I'm not certain which list's members may have the answer to my questions. The AIS Census Index for the 1850 Federal Population Schedule for Abbeville "County" (i.e., at that time, District) lists "Saluda Regiment" under "Township or Other Info." Can anyone tell me what Saluda Regiment was; approximately where it was located; what earlier Enumeration Distirct it might have replaced; and/or why it appears neither before or after the 1850 Census, at least not for any of the WALLER family members I'm researching. They are: William W. WALLER, pg 112 in 1850 Peleus A. WALLER, pg 114 in 1850. "No Township Listed" in 1860 entries (pgs. 046 & 047) Nancy WALLER, pg 115 in 1850. "No Township Listed" in 1860 entry (pg 066) John WALLER, pg 123 in 1850. TIA for your assistance and have an enjoyable and safe weekend. Judith in Brooklyn

    2. Judith G. Brabham
    3. Hello, Much earlier this month, I posted queries regarding Southern Claims Commission claims filed from SC. Yesterday I received the following response from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. Forgive its multiple appearances, I am cross-posting this so that all who responded to my earlier queries may see it. Judith in Brooklyn, NY Trying to establish a firmer foothold on the shoulders of the ancestors who are my support and my strength. BACKUS, BRABHAM, BROWN, BROWNFIELD, DEAS, GAILLARD, HART, KEARSE, LOWNDES, NIX, ROBINSON, STARLING, WALLER - --------------------------------------------------------- Dear Ms. Brabham, The South Carolina Department of Archives and History has two collection related to the Southern Claims Commission. The first collection consists of 14 rolls of microfilm produced by the National Archives and Records Administration. The records reproduced on this microfilm included journals of the commission, correspondence to and from the special investigative agents employed by the commission, and other miscellaneous papers. This series also includes a alphabetical register of claims filed and a state by state listing of claimants. The second collection is an unpublished manuscript listing the 578 claims filed in South Carolina. It provides itemized details on 127 of 150 allowed claims and on all 230 rejected claims. Accounts are missing for 23 of the allowed claims and little information was found on the approximately 300 barred or withdrawn claims from the state. The actual claims are held by the National Archives and Records Administration. 1. South Reserve Units - 1861 thru 1865
    2. Bil Brasington
    3. I apologize if you have received this message more than once but I am sending to all the lists I belong. During the war years, many men served in reserve units. I have built a site of all such units I cab find, most with rosters of the men who served. I have built a web site at http://www.geocities.com/screbels_1864/SC_Militia.html with some data about the troops (some more than others) and wish to have more. I have some battle and field assignments. If you have data on any of these units and/or the men (and boys) who served, I would love to hear from you. I would love to know what county each was raised from. Researchers have generally over looked them but every county contributed to these units. If you send data, let me know whether you wish for me to add your email to the page or not (your choice). Anyway, take a look and honor their service on this Memorial Day. W A "Bil" Brasington PS. The 1864 units (my special interest) is included on the above link and can also be reached at http://freeweb.pdq.net/Bil_Brasington/SeedCorn.htm to steal from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research. Why couldn't I have had one paper "pack rat" ancestor? ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

The parents of the Stukes children were J. J. Stukes who died in 1898 and Sophie E. Stukes who was in the State Insane Asylum at least twice and she died in 1903 shortly after she was admitted. I do not know the maiden name of Sophie. If anyone knows who she was and can let me know who her family was I would really appreciate it. I don't know whether to contact the Probate Office to see if there was some kind of guardianship papers drawn up for these teenagers. I have searched everywhere and cannot find any record of these Stukes. I looked in the SSDI and could not find either of the Stukes males. I had assumed Mabell had married and here name would be changed. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Terry Griffin Britt (female) Florence, SC

    3. Hello, Perhaps, in yesterday's query, I should have given the reference from which the "Pleasant Grove" on which I am seeking information came. Among the 6/10/1850 (Abbeville District) estate administration papers for Benjamin F. WALLER was the following letter: "PLEASANT GROVE April 29, 1851 Mm. F. W. Selleck Dear Sir: You will please have the kindness to make the sett. of the est. of Benjamin F. Waller decd. with Gilford Waller the admnr. as we are perfetly [sic] willing to abide by the sett. you and him will make. Yours very respectfully, W. 3. Hello, My g grandfather, Thomas WALLER, is listed on the 1870 Census as living in the "Saluda Division" of "Edgefield `County'." Can anyone give me an approximate description of what that division of old Edgefield District encompassed in 1870, and what county (Greenwood, Edgefield, Saluda) includes that division today? Also, does anyone know whether there was a place named "Pleasant Grove" in old Edgefield District ca. 1859 and its location? Thanks in advance for any clarification you may be kind enough to provide.
