    2. Hi Sharon, I pulled out my notes on Elizabeth. The information came from a Butler cousin. I am trying to verify if she was in fact buried at Greenville Presbyterian Church in Shoals Junction, thus far no success. The cousin has her listed as Elizabeth James Dunn Swancey which was confusing to me. Your note helps me out. Apparently the info was meant to show Elizabeth as daughter of James Dunn who married a Swancey/Swaney. I have her dates (unconfirmed) as born 5 Dec 1835 died 21 Dec 1912 and also that she is buried at Greenville Presbyterian Church. I have not confirmed this yet. I have her listed as the second wife of Preston/Pressley James Butler born 18 Jul 1829 died 11 Mar 1902. He is buried at Good Hope Baptist Church in Saluda Co. with his first wife Georgianna Attaway (1833-1862). Between the two wives, it seems he had 15 known children. Suzanne

    3. Suzanne, You and I have corresponded before regarding our Holtzclaws. I saved your email from late July since I saw the name Dunn which is another of my lines. The Dunns are from a paternal line whereas the Holtzclaws are a maternal line. I'm behind in my emails, but today I finally had a chance to research Elizabeth James Dunn Swancey. I don't know if you have received any answers to your email before this, but I wanted to let you know that I have an Elizabeth Dunn married to a John Swaney. I'm fairly sure this must be your Elizabeth although I do not have a birth or death date and no other marital info. Elizabeth's parents were: James Dunn b. Sept. 8, 1809 d. Sept. 8, 1835 He is listed as living in the Abbeville Dist. and buried in the Greenville Presbyterian Cemetery. Many of my Dunns are buried there, and since many of them were very early residents of the area and buried there I think the "Old" Greenville and the Greenville Presbyterian Cemetery are one in the same. James wife was Nancy Caroline Calvert b. 1813 -- no death date. Their children were: Ally Ann b. 1831 Jane Elizabeth Margaret James' father wasWilliam Dunn, Sr. b. 1777 d. April 03, 1856 m. Aisly or Ally Richey b. 1778. William's father was James Dunn b. 1734 Ireland d. Jan. 11, 1805 Abbeville Dist., buried in the Greenville Presb. Cemetery. James had a very early land grant in the area. I hope this information will be of help. 3. Hi Guys: Buck is right in what he says. I have some details about this cemetery and church that is really not associated. (but kind of is). My grandfathers sister, Gertrude Estelle Compton, married Thomas Henderson Stuart, all, in and of Greenwood. I just got off the telephone with the son of Thomas Henderson Stuart who repeated the following history as he gave to me last summer. A short pencil is much better than a long memory ....... remember that ! Here's what he said to me...again: ############## My grandfather, (Thomas Henderson Stuart's father), gave the land away for this cemetery to "the community" about 1850. It now belongs to an association which "keeps it up". The Bethlehem Cemetery was already there and in place when the Methodist Church built in what is now the cemetery grounds. (This specifically would be inside the front and slightly to the left of the entrance). The church really didn't have any association with the cemetery. In fact, they had a school there at one time. That Church, the Coronaca Methodist Church, has since moved to Coronaca. The school was actually before my time. The reason why I know this church was moved is because my uncle and his wife were married in the Baptist Church because they were moving the Methodist Church at the time and that was around 1902. Later, we sold, which really amounted to "giving", about four additional acres of our place to add to the space of the cemetery to make it bigger. I asked about any Collins he might remember. He said. "I knew some of them that are buried there...they lived two or three miles below the cemetery and then there was W. A. Collins who used to live there in Coronaca; might have had some money. His wife's name was Mitty (Middy?). ################ My Great Grandfather (William Berry Compton) and wife P. 2. Thanks for the great info, Charlie! With contributions like that you shouldn't lurk! It is a beautiful and peaceful place. I was there in April to take pictures of the headstones of my family lines that are buried there. I began thinking about a church being there because of an obituary for John Baldwin who died 15 May 1901 that specifically mentioned the Bethlehem Church cemetery. John Baldwin was the teenage son of Martha Collins (1848-1924) who married (1) ? Baldwin and (2) W. T. Norwood. The Collinses that are remembered by your relative are Buck's line as well as mine. W. A. Collins did live in Coronaca; I believe he owned a store. His wife's name was Mittie Fooshe. Suzanne Collins Matson

    3. Posted on: Greenwood Co. SC Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/GreenwoodObits/2 Surname: Baldwin, Norwood ------------------------- The Greenwood Index May 23, 1901 Accidentally shot himself On the 15th inst., John Baldwin shot and accidentally killed himself at the home of his step father, W. T. Norwood, near Quarry, this county. The young man was cleaning out his gun, a muzzle loader and intended to twist a load out of one barrel. In order to do this he cocked one of the barrels, leaned the gun against the side of the house and went away for something. When he returned he picked up the gun by the barrel and drew it towards him. In doing so the trigger or hammer caught on a nail, causing the gun to go off, and the whole load entered the young man's right side. The nearest physician was sent for immediately, but the unfortunate young man was beyond the aid of medical attention. He died in half an hour after the deplorable accident. He was buried at Bethlehem church the next day. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives.

    2. I am researching the ancestors and descendants of Nathan Chaney who died 1831 in the Ninety Six area. The following children were named in his will: Simeon, Robert, Thomas and a daughter (first name unknown) who married Daniel Hitt. I have information about Simeon (my 3g-grandfather), but very little about Robert and Thomas. I have no information on the daughter except the name of her husband. Simeon was born 1797 in Halifax Co., Va and moved to the Ninety Six area around 1807. He died in 1870 and is buried in the Chaney Family Cemetery. Robert was born c. 1798 according to the census and wife was named Susan. I don't know where he is buried. Thomas may have died in the State Mental Hospital in 1836. I would like to exchange information with others researching this family line. Suzanne Collins Matson

I'll be unsubscribing under my current e-mail address and immediately re-subscribing under my new e-mail address (<norisun65@yahoo.com>) this weekend. Meantime, I wanted to list the Greenwood area ancestors I'm researching: Seanie (WHITE?)-WALLER (19th century dob & d. 1873); place of burial unknown (my gg grandmother) Nanny & Ellis/Elliott BACKUS (dob, dod & place of burial unknown, possibly Save All cemetery); living in Greenwood area as slaves by 1859. Believed to have been on the John Randolph plantation named Roanoke in Charlotte County, VA until their manumission c. 1846 and re-enslavement shortly thereafter in VA on their way to lands purchased by Randolph for his 350+ manumitted slaves (my gg grandparents) Thomas WALLER of Rte. #2 in Ninety Six/Epworth/Fellowship Township (b. 5/3/1853, d. 5/10/1925); buried old Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery, Epworth/Fellowship (my g grandfather) Sina BACKUS-WALLER (b. 1859, d. 9/22/1924); buried old Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery, Epworth/Fellowship (my g grandmother) Sally WALLER-BACKUS (dob unknown (c. 1850), d. 1911); buried Save All cemetery, Greenwood (sister of my g grandfather) James BACKUS (b. abt. 1846 in VA, d. 1905 in Greenwood, SC); buried Save All cemetery, Greenwood (brother of my g grandmother) In addition to information on my ancestors and their slave holders, I am particularly interested in locating the church records of old Mt. Zion Baptist Church as I am certain they would provide clues to my WALLER-BACKUS ancestors. Judith
