Harrison Born 1880 Personal Notes for George Augustus Harrison On last Monday morning, 12/2/1895, Mr. George Augustus Harrison, who lived on J. S. Watson's farm, about 7 miles south of this city, near Phoenix, committed suicide by shooting himself through the head. Mr. Harrison was 61 years of age and had in his time suffered a great many misfortunes and reverses and disappointments. Brooding over his troubles, he came to the conclusion that life was not worth living and so put an end to his existence. Trial Justice W. G. Austin, received notice early Monday morning and acting as Coroner, went to the scene and impanelled a jury to inquire into the killing. The jury consisted of the following citizens: G. F. Ross, Foreman, A. A. Dominick, E. L. Tolbert, H. M. Wilkerson, B. M. Williams, George Tettards, S. W. Dominick, George Koon, Monroe Hardy, J. S. Watson, Stephen Worthington, Samuel Rampey and Daniel Rampey. Dr. R. B. Epting was called in to examine the body as Official Physician. The evidence brought out by the jury leaves no doubt that is was a case of suicide deliberately planned. From the evidence the death cannot be explained on the supposition either of foul play or of accident. R. G. Cheatham, the first man to enter the room after the shooting, found the deceased lying on his left side, his head on a stick of wood, with a Smith & Wesson No. 82 pistol in his right hand and his thumb on the trigger. The pistol was loaded, all but one chamber, which had been recently fired. Mr. Cheatham says he lived twenty minutes after his arrival but was not conscious at any time. The testimony of Dr. Epting was that the ball entered above and in front of the right ear and penetrated the head ranging downward and was lodged behind the left ear. The wound was such as would cause certain death, though not necessarily instant death. The verdict of the jury was in substance, that the deceased came to his death by a gunshot wound inflicted by his own hand with suicidal intent. The remains were interred Tuesday at Mountain Creek Church in Edgefield County, of which Church the unfortunate man had many years been a constant member. The funeral was Preached by the Pastor Rev. J. J. Ouzts The dead man leaves behind him to mourn his loss four sons and three daughters, all of whom are married, except one son and one daughter. III. Rev. 2. Susanne. I didn't realize you are from the Rhesa line, s/o Benjamin BUTLER & Rachel PITTS! My husband descends from Rhesa's older sister, Hester "Hetty" BUTLER who m. Henry BUTLER, s/o Daniel BUTLER & Catherine JOHNSON [which I think is actually JOHNSTON.] These are the other 2 Newberry-Saluda area BUTLER lines. I only have thru to the children (mostly per census data) of Henry William BUTLER & Elizabeth "Lizzie" BUTLER. Could you send me the line to you? I'd be happy to share anything you'd like. 2. Annie, I don't have a Guy Butler in my data, either. Suzanne, my husband doesn't descend from the Preston Butlers (like you), but those Butlers married into my husband's lines pretty frequently. I have my husband descending from 3-4 lines of Butlers (not the wealthy Butlers of Edgefield), all but 1 being Saluda/Newberry. Most of them are buried in Butler Cem or Good Hope Bapt. Many lived around Ninety Six as well. Looking forward to hearing more from you when you get the chance. Bonnie Butler

    2. Hi, We have corresponded before on the Butlers. I have made some progress this year with my Butlers. Thus far I have two separate lines of Butlers as far as I can tell. I have been told that her tombstone is still standing in the cemetery. So sometime this spring I hope to get to Shoals Junction and get a picture. And I will send you a copy. I went to Shoals Junction many times as a child to the Butler reunion. I grew up in Greenville County SC. My father was from Greenwood-his mother was a Butler. I am working on a big BBQ fundraiser this weekend for my son's Scout Troop, so it will be next week before I can put some info together for you. Suzanne
