OK, I don't want to sound smarter than I am, but what do want to know about the Carrolls, Drummonds and Clems? John Drummond is the Senator. He was born 9-29-1919 to James William and Fannie Smith Drummond. John has several brothers....Cal was a major league umpire, and Blackie was the game warden for flipping ever... They ran Drummond Brothers Gulf Oil Distributorship, which is now John Drummond Gulf. They're from the lower part of the county, and John and Blackie live in Ninety Six. They may have grown up at or near the orginal Buzzards' Roost between Ninety Six and Chappells. The only thing I know about the Clems is that I went to school with Carroll Clem. He is probably locatable. I think they were also from the Ninety Six Highway area, out near Mt. Lebanon Church or the Scotch Crossroads. He drove a school bus from that area, Callison maybe. The Carrolls and the Brookses are interrelated. My brother-in-law is Carroll Brooks Bannister. There are Carrolls all over the county today, but I think they came from New Market at one time. Do you have Margaret Watson's book "Greenwood County Sketches"? She tracked the families that were in the county before 1800. If you can be more specific with names, dates, etc., I'll try to direct you to someone who really knows. annie

    3. Stony Point , Greenwood Co, SC is on Hwy 246 and the Old Laurens Rd north of the Greenwood Airport. The "Smiths of Stony Point" settled in the area in 1795 in a log cabin, then finished a brick house about 1820ish that's still in great shape on Hwy 246. They called the house Stony Point. They had the second post office in the area. Washington, DC spelled it Stoney Point but the family always spelled it Stony Point. So its on Hwy 246 west of Old Laurens RD. I desperately need verification and a copy of a marriage license that was performed somewhere in South Carolina. I am also a genealogist (25 yr), a mother and grandmother that is fighting to keep her grandson out of an very abusive and dysfunctional home of the other grandmother. Time is running out-they are packing to move in a very short time. The judge said that if I can prove that this marriage did exist, our daughter can get her son. The record I need was filed between 1990-1993 by LAWRENCE LINDOL CURTIS and TINA MARIE HARRIS/ALEXANDER/HOARD. I am praying that someone in each county lives close enough to the county seat to check it out for us. Please reply to me, and I will give you my fax number AND get your mailing info, so I can send you $50. to cover the cost and your expense. > Thanks in advance to all that can help. > > Kay McGregor > McGREGOR, ELLEDGE, MAUPIN, MULLINS, DUCKER, MADDOX, SWANNER in SC > >

It's been a long time since I've seen him. The Devlin family was quite prominent in the Verdery-Bradley area, and I believe his mother ran the hotel on the railroad line for the railroad workers. (I may have them confused with the Ligons.) Their homeplace is about 2-3 miles from Cedar Springs Church, the historic mother church of the ARPs throughout the Carolinas -- if you don't count Lower Long Cane, which was better known but established later, I think. I believe the Devlins may have been Methodist.

One of my aunts told me that my >grandparents lived there for a few years. I checked my Greenwood County map >with no luck. > >Suzanne Collins Matson > Hi, Suzanne: Okay, I do absolutely know this one! Woodlawn is generally the area between the old Mccormick hwy, now S.C. 10 (Maxwell Avenue) after it passes through Connie Maxwell, and the new Abbeville Highway. Specifically, the Woodlawn Road turns left off the Abbeville Highway just before you get to the old Jones Place -- and just after you pass the right turn to the Old Abbeville Road at the Copper Kettle. It is now called Chinquapin Road, and about 3 miles out that road the first subdivision, Chinquapin, was built. i believe the exact location of the old Woodlawn School was at the intersection of Woodlawn and Tranquil Road, which runs from Maxwelton (Hwy. 10) to the Abbeville Highway and then follows some old road tracks on over toward the Deadfalls. The old airport, a landing strip, was on Woodlawn Road. Westgate amd some other subdivisions are there now. we lived on "Massengill Hill" on Sunset Drive -- when we first moved out there (1950) the cow-path, set off by barbed wire, ran behind the few houses that had been built so I believe it was the Waites' and Stevenson's cows could be driven down to Curltail Creek, which we called "three hills over". Who were your grandparents? Maybe I can help you pin this down better. The last time we were home, we drove out that way, and it appears to be ALL HOUSING NOW. I remember the Becks, the Halls, the Faulkners but it would take some real head-scratching to come up with any more. "The top of my head" isn't as broad as it used to be, so there isn't as much room for stuff. Annie
