Another family from records of Camden Archives and Museum, Camden SC. I made a connection to this family thru the Sarah Burnett d/o Willis Burnett and Abigail Peterson who were in my files. Linda Baughn Bbaughn@aol.com is researching that line and has more on the Abigail Peterson line, but I have not entered all of her information into my FTM. Also Margaret King, 501 Coolidge Rocky Ford Rd., Coolidge Ga. 31738 <kingtwo@surfsouth.com, (Nov, 2000), "Electronic." H.C. Ouzts has a Jones family file. Additions and corrections would be welcome, especially if anyone can add anything on the rest of the children of John. Census data: 1850 and 1880 Transcribed census. Not original H.C. Ouzts CONFLICT: 1880 Census records of Seaborn [1880 Census: Batesburg, Lexington, South Carolina, p. 383B] and Nathaniel [1880 Census Place: Mctier, Aiken, South Carolina, p. 156D] raise question about birthplace of John Jones. If these two men are his sons, one says Nathaniel was born in NC, the other says VA. The DAR records gave SC. Remeber to verify or get actual source documentation before assuming the family file is correct. This is not one of my main lines, and I sorta put it together after the connections in the DAR files connected a couple of the families I had. All of the children of John came from the DAR files. Billie
POPE and STROTHER families. Related lines include MATTHEWS, HOLLOWAY, MOORE, HILL, ABNEY, SELF, KING and others. I am posting some information that I found in some very old books of info. from DAR records from the "DAR Traveling Library". The library no longer travels" but it housed at the Camden Archives and Museun, Camden, SC. These records are from 4 old books that contain DAR records and Bible records, etc. of early members of DAR who joined Chapters in SC. All are not pertinent to Edgefield Dist, some not even to SC, but I have found lots of informatiom that has helped me tie some families together that were already in my files. I has been exciting for me to read a record that was filed in early 1900s by someone who possibly even talked to their Rev. War ancestor, who was their grand or great-grandfather. Some don't have the dates they were filed, however. Very little proof is given in the old files, but guess if you were that close to the time period, they figure that you knew the info. No locations were given except for the Rev. War soldier and the person who submitted the file. I will post several families where info. came from these Books and will site the DAR sources. If anyone can add to the info. about these families, please do so. I have not researched any further in census, cemetary books, deeds and still have 2 more books to go. So will post as I find them. Because I was able to make connections, my other research in now linked to the family and also shows up. Other desc. of several folks comes from HC Ouzts' files and my own research. It was exciting when I was able to connect to this family as I found marriages to people I already had in my files w/o spouse. I will be glad to send a genealogy report with notes and sources to anyone who request the info. First: The SOLOMON POPE family. I was interested in this one, because both my great uncle David Pope DeCoursey and his father William Pope Coursey had the middle name Pope and I do not know where it came from. I still have not made the connection that shows it connected to any of the families in their direct line except the Holloways, but even that is not to the direct Holloway ancestor. So I will work on that some more. Hope the info. below helps someone out. I have no other verification other than the DAR records for Solomon POPE and his children. Other desc. of several folks comes from HC Ouzts' files, other contacts who have share their data and my own research. I was able to connect to this family as I found marriages to people in my files. I will be glad to send a genealogy report with notes and sources to anyone who request the info. Billie Jones Camden, SC tjones@camden.net Family of SOLOMON POPE: NOTES on Solomon from DAR # 282722 Mrs. Julia King Medlock, Augusta, Ga. (Old Ninety Six Chapter). The file states that Solomon Pope was born in Edgefield, SC in 1740 and died in Edgefield district, SC on the 22nd of May 1794. She sites: Stub Indents to Rev. claims growing out of the Rev. War Book R to T, p. 292 (Lib.1) --No. 614 issued 30th June 1780 to Solomon Pope for fifty-two pounds 13 shillings and 2 pense 1/2 for Military duty per account audited. Principal 152. 13. 21/2. Interest 1. 3. 18.-8. Verified by National number 128343. Sworn bofore me at Edgefield Co, SC this 18th day of April, 1933. She also gives Solomon's father as Sampson Pope. MY COMMENTS: At the time of the birth of Solomon Pope, there was no Edgefield Dist. There was a Colleton Dist that ran from the coast to NC, that included eastern Edgefield and Abbeville, Saluda, Greenwood, western Newberry and Laurens Co. along with others. Then the 96th district was formed in 1769. It was not until 1785 that the early counties/Dist were formed. Therefore, Solomon would actually have been born in Colleton Dist, or if further west, in the Granville Dist. that ran along the Savannah River from the coast to NC and also included part of Edgefield Co. that is next to McCormick today. In the info that I have entered into the database from these DAR records (found in the SCDAR Libary located in the Camden Archives and Museum, Camden SC), I have sometime used more than one source. Hi, My name is Michelle Manley Wells, and I grew up in Greenwood. I remember many, many years ago, my grandfather James Franklin (Jim) Manley telling me that he attended Utopia School. I even remember the old building still standing on Hwy. 25 south (eons ago), not far from Scotch Cross Road where the old Turner house still stands. Is anyone familiar enough with the old school to share information about it, or perhaps point toward a good source of information? Many thanks, Michelle

I'm looking for any information regarding Zachariah W. ARNOLD and his brothers, James Arnold and William Arnold. Am trying to find out who their parents were. The brothers all left South Carolina around 1840 and moved to Tippah County, Mississippi. Through misc. documents in the 1800's, I find that these Arnolds lived in the area between the towns of Greenwood and Cokesbury, near a plantation named "Arnold" (just north of Deadfall). According to an old 1820 map, this section is now Greenwood County. Can anyone tell me about the area or how Deadfall got it's name? Other families that were neighbors to my Zachariah W. Arnold were: John Arnold and Barbara Pettus; James W. Pettis (or Pettus); Anna Louis Shotwell; Frederick Gray; Casander Gray; Logan family; Davenport family; Graves, Skinner, Reynolds, Bostick, Cochran, and Buchanan families. They all had dealings with my Zachariah W. Arnold between 1820-1840 in SC and some of these people moved to Tippah County, Mississippi with him in 1840. If anyone is researching these families or knows anything at all about the area, I would love to hear from you. Please email me at kklaes@inu.net

From the middle of town, go north, and it is on the right after you pass Wachovia Bank, and across a bridge over a railroad track. Good Luck.
I am looking for the location of Bethany Church near Quarry. I haven't found it on my Greenwood or Abbeville map. My gg-aunt, Martha Collins, was a long time member of a Bethany Church near Quarry according to her obituary. She is buried in Bethlehem Cemetery near Coronaca on Highway 246. She was first married to a Baldwin and then W. T. Norwood ( 1839-1914). She had one known child, John Baldwin, who died tragically in a gun accident in 1901 at the age of 16. Her second husband and her son are buried with her at Bethlehem. Suzanne Collins Matson
Hi Dennis, Thank you for your information. I was thinking in a Baptist church mindset because the Chaneys and some Days were members of Siloam Baptist Church. I didn't even think about Rock Church. I know exactly where the church is located! I spent part of my summer vacation each summer with my grandparents who lived in Coronaca and know the area around Highway 72 and Highway 246 fairly well. Dear Suzanne, The book, "Greenwood County Sketches: Old Roads and Early Families", by Margaret Watson, Attic Press, 1982, gives some information about Rocky Creek Presbyterian Church. (Now called Rock Church.) Pages 75-78 Under the sub-heading, "Presbyterian Beginnings" (Citing as source, Howe's "History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina," published 1870.) Possibly the oldest organized church in the county. A communion service was conducted at Rocky Creek in the fall of 1771, according to Howe. The name was changed from Rocky Creek to Rock Church in 1844. First built as a log building, replaced with a frame building which burned in 1959. Replaced in 1960 with a rock building on the same spot. Became dormant in 1906, revived in 1956. Located on the north side of Hwy. 72, about 2.5 miles east of Greenwood. Original location not definitely known. Tradition says it was first constructed on an enormous flat rock which was partially the floor and foundation. I am searching for the location of a Rocky Creek Church in which the request of Isaac Sample to be appointed administrator of Luke Day's estate might have been read. It was read in the church 6 Mar 1836. Luke Day left money in his will to four Chaney children. I am researching documents to discover the relationship between Luke Day and the Chaney children.
