I also knew a Barbara, but I thought her surname was spelled Hicks. Graduated about the same time as I from GHS in June 1964. Have no idea now who her parents were or where they are located. Would any of you Smith researchers have information on a John Smith who had a wife Narcissa. They are given as the parents of my g-grandfather John Wesley Smith b. January 06, 1868 in SC. His death certificate had his mother's name as Narcissa [Breadwell?] but no father's name. His RR retirement file contained a father John Smith. there is a place of birth for him as Lexington, but with a question mark. Does anyone know if there has been a book published by Arcadia Publishing, 2 Cumberland Street, Charleston, SC 29401 called "Images of America"? There have been several done in some of the southern states like Alabama, Louisiana. These books are great for a pictorial history. They are small but very powerful books. It would be one way to get the photos of the old sites in our hands. sheryl -----Original Message----- From: John Turner [mailto:jwt@geusnet.com] Sent: Friday, July 19, 2002 10:58 AM To: SCGREENW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCGREENW] Greenwood County Farm Deborah, I have long searched for a picture. Thanks so much for your reply, John. I've been wondering what was meant by "county farm"in that obituary. Would you happen to have a picture of the place...or know where I could find one? Do you think there would be any records of the people who lived there? Thanks again for responding! deborah

According to his 1937 obituary, my great-grandfather Ira W. MAJOR died at the Greenwood "county farm". Does anyone know if he would be listed in the 1930 census, and if so which district? Thanks for any help. deborah
Deborah, It is great to finally hear of someone who has heard of the "County Farm". I lived there in early 50's if it is the same place you are speaking about. It was off the 96 highway, a big 3 story wooden house down a long lane of huge Oak trees. It was originally used to produce crops during hard times as I understand it. It has been razed now and turned into a type of elitist community with no trespassing signs the last time I was there (about 3 years ago). Sorry I can't help with your census info, just wanted to say hello, but it would either be the Greenwood or 96 district I'm thinking.
