Pat, I have a Dillard Smith who was born in 1839 in Rutherford County. He was the brother of my gg grandmother, Martha Smith Walker. I really haven't been able to find him after the 1850 Rutherford County census, when he was with his parents. My Dillard's parents were John and Mathilda/Mira Smith of Rutherford. Do you think this Dillard Smith may be related to your Dillard Smith? I sure hope so, as I have two lines of Smiths (mine in Rutherford and Polk Counties and my husband's line in Greenville Co.). As if families aren't hard enough to find, my mother-in-law's maiden name was Smith and my mother's was Brown. Please let me know, if you think these could be related. I found a Dillard Smith age 30, wh., b. NC; in the 1850 North Carolina census, Lake Creek, Bladen Co; with sister Emily J. 37; Catharine (niece) 18; Isabella mother 80; living next door to Washington Smith age 47, m. wh. b. NC.; Amelia C. 30 wife; Elizabeth P. dau. 9; Laura, dau. 6; and Mary I. dau. 9mos. There is also a John Smith listed in the same county, Bethel, Bladen Co. 60 yrs. b. NC; wife Ann E. 65 NC; Melton H. son, 22; Luther SSon 19; Emaline, dau. 12. All three households, all the parents are listed as being born in NC., not SC. I found one other Dillard Smith listed (Black), in the US in 1880.
