I am surprised to hear this about Hopewell House. I and several family members got permission from Clemson to go through the home a couple of years ago. We wanted to do so because my great grandfather, Johnny Mack Landreth, was overseer there for many, many years when it was the Cherry farm. My grandmother, Vivian McAbee, spent most of her childhood in the house and we had heard many things about it. The gentleman at CU was delighted to hear from us, said they had plans to restore it and wanted any information we had. My uncle, now in his 80s, remembered a great deal about it from when he was a little boy. They tape recorded everything he said about where the orchards and outbuildings were. We were told that they intended to renovate it and open it for tours. We check ever so often but, as you say, nothing seems to have been done. I am saddened to hear this. I don't remember the gentleman's name that took us through the house. As you say, there's plenty of mon! ey, so wonder what happened.
