Dolly, I'm working on the same Clayton line. I have a copy of an application to the DAR that has information about John Clayton's service in the Revolutionary War. I'll be happy to share. Have you been to the Polk County (Tennessee) Historical Society website? That's where these folks landed. The historical society November 2000 quarterly magazine was dedicated to the line of William Clayton (supposedly John Clayton's father, although I've seen him listed as James, too.) Hope this helps.
