I am trying to put together a speculative genealogy of the family of Nancy Crawford who married George Davis, then Murry Woodson. Her dates were 1824-1875. Her children were George Washington Davis, John W. Davis, Mary Elizabeth Davis, and William Dendy Davis. In one of his letters home during the war, George refers to Uncle John, whom I identify as the John Crawford living in Greenville County in the 1850s. I think it is likely that both John and Nancy were members of the Crawford family that lived in the lower-eastern part of the county. This probably includes Moses Crafford of 1790, and his possible sons Peter, Strother, Samuel , and Thomas. Moses was quite possibly the son of William Crawford who died in Culpepper Va. in 1779. His line includes the names Peter and Strother. This William may well have married a Strother. His father has been identified by some as William of Spotsylvania, but might well be the David Crawford who married Elizabeth Smith. One of these Crawfor! ds married Elizabeth Ford, who considering location was possibly one of the many granddaughters of Stephen Ford. These Crawford were yeomen/small planters, and except for Nancy and John, appear to have left the county largely by 1850. I expect her parents died young. I also suspect that she was the daughter of the Crawford-Ford marriage. Both John and Nancy were apparently literate. If anyone else is interested in working on this family, please contact me. Daniel, I am interested in this family as well as the Davis family. I have a cousin in Shelby NC, who is also working on the Crawford family.
