The Greenville Daily News, Greenville, S.C., June 9, 1904, (pages were not numbered but it was on one of the back pages in column one) Death of Mr. Sheppard John A. Sheppard, a well known citizen of Butler, died at the home of his son, Vance Sheppard, yesterday, after two weeks illness. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Sheppard was a highly esteemed citizen and in his death his family and the community have sustained a severe loss. He was a veteran of the civil war and served during the entire period as a member of Company F, First South Carolina cavalry. He leaves a family of nine children and a large connection of relatives.
