    2. AIKEN, SC---John Franklin Elliott, 84, of Surrey Circle, died Sunday, July 8, 2001 at Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12, 2001 at St. John's United Methodist Church. The Revs. Sheila Rogers, Kenneth Nelson, & Eugene Mullikin will officiate. Burial will be private. Mr. Elliott was a native of GRATIOT COUNTY, WI. He was retired from the DuPont Company, where he worked as an engineer. He was a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto award, the state of South Carolina's highest honor. He founded Helping Hands, & served as its president; founded the Aiken Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, served as president of Alston Wilkes Society, & was co-founder of the Aiken County Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Council. Mr. Elliott led the construction to the Albert George Park on US 1, led the construction of four mini-parks in Aiken, did construction & landscaping for the Council on Aging, & assisted with the construction of wheelchair ramps for the St. John's United Methodist Men. He served as chairman of the Parks Commission of the City of Aiken, & was a member of the South Carolina Board of Pardons & Parole. He was also a member of the Aiken County Salvation Army Board, & was the 1977 Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year. He was the 1985 Aiken Rotary! Volunteer of the year, and was the recipient of the 1977 Sertoma Club Service to Mankind. Mr. Elliott was a member of the young Life Board & a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Anne P. Elliott of AIKEN; a daughter, Pam Elliott of GREENVILLE, SC; 2 sons, John D. "Jay" Elliott & Scott Elliott, both of COLUMBIA, SC; 3 grandchildren. Pallbearers will be David Baxter, Orton Bellamy, David Jett, James Minear, Harry Burdette, Ronald Jernigan, Charles Henshaw, & C. M. Montgomery. Memorials may be made to United Way, 118 Park Avenue, Aiken, 29801, or to St. John's Methodist Church building fund, 104 Newberry Street, Aiken, 29801. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001. Shellhouse Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. [Aiken Standard, Aiken, SC, Monday, July 9, 2001].
