I don't have any WOOTEN ancestry that I'm aware of, but I spent a few years in eastern North Carolina, mainly Lenoir County (seat: Kinston), which is _full_ of Wootens. In my own case, my Hugh Hardy WHITAKER (1765-1849) was born in the vicinity of Raleigh (state capital of NC, and also centrally located in NC), but his dad, John Whitaker (Patriotic Service, per Patriot Index) (about 1745-1823) had migrated from eastern North Carolina (vicinity of Enfield, Halifax Co.) to central North Carolina. Hugh Hardy WHITAKER migrated to the Pendleton District with his Perry in-laws, and was a cousin of the two WHITAKER brothers who settled in the Kershaw District shortly before the Revolution. Hugh is the apparent ancestor of all Whitaker lines in Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties that were here before 1860. My ggfather, George Robert WHITAKER, was Hugh's grandson through his youngest son, David Lorenzo WHITAKER. Incidentally, Hugh was a Methodist class leader in the Keowee area, David was a Methodist lay preacher, and George was one of three brothers [Marvin who migrated to Texas and Hugh who married into the SLIGH family of Newberry were the other two.] who became regularly-ordained Methodist ministers.
