I also noticed that you have ancestors in SC, which also happens to be the location of the branch of my family that I am researching. May I ask how the name Loomis came into being in your family? I have a suggestion for your research that someone just gave me. SC has placed many items on line, as well as lists of documents that are available for a small fee. Try these sites: http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/research.htm http://www.scdhec.net/vr/death.htm The first one contains records of court documents that may be of some assistance to you. The second is the public records division which may be of some sort of help to you. I am researching two branches of my family at seem to have a root in SC. One is Col John Q. Loomis who was an attorney who was born in SC. he moved to Alabama and was with the 25th Alabama. He was wounded at Shiloh and was a brigade commander at Murfreesboro. He disappears after the war. The other branch seems to have originated in New York where the main branch of my family originated. His name is Cyreneus Loomis (also found as Cyrenius, and Cyrenins) and the 1850 census states that he was born in NY in 1805. I have found court documents that list his presence in SC as early as 1835 which I am going to Columbia to investigate in August. He had three sons: Charles E. who served in the 3rd Batallion SC Light Artillery (Palmetto Batallion) and served in Columbia, John H (Harvey?) who was captured in Culpepper, VA and was a POW who returned to SC, and Hayne H. who was killed in Petersburg, VA. Cyreneus died during the war in 1864. I believe that John H eventually settled in Aiken and died around 1912. If any of this rings a bell with you I would sure appreciate your sharing any information that you may have that would assist me with my quest. Thanks for your time, John (John Henry Loomis) Alexandria, VA
