I was wondering if anyone had a transcribed copy of a will for Joshua Gosnell that they would be willing to share? It is indexed under Greenville County - Apt 15 / File 99 - I checked the Greenville library but they did not have it in their microfilm. This Joshua was born 15 February 1769 in Anne Arundal Co, MD and died 1851 in Greenville Co, SC. His wife was Judith Ballew d/o Abraham Ballew. She died in 1860. I descend from Joshua's daughter Elizabeth who married Burrell Jackson Stewart. If anyone has any additional information on these people I would appreciate it. I will share what I have as well. Does anyone know who these people are? 1920 Census / SC / Greenville Co / Glassy Mt Gosnell, Davis / 56 / M / Farmer Sarah / 58 / F They are living between a W. Henry Gosnell age 46 and his wife Davina and a Bennie Gosnell age 35 and his wife Lessie Jane. In the 1910 census Davis is listed in the same area as living by himself and widowed. In the Greenville county marriage list there is a Davis Gosnell who married a Sarah Moon on 8 August 1912. 1870 Glassy Mt., Greenville Co., SC Census Gasnell, John - 44- male , Sarah - 46- female - wife , Angela - 21 female - dau , Sarah - 19 female - dau , Joseph - 17 male - son , Huela - 16 female - dau , John - 14 male - son , Allen - 12 male - son , Wilburn - 10 male - son , Davis - 8 - male - son I believe that John Gosnell & Sarah Pruitt Gosnell are the parents of Davis Gosnell. If so, he is also a brother to Allen C. Gosnell who married Mary "Mamie" Stewart d/o Alfred Anderson Stewart and Louisa Jane Robertson Stewart. They are all buried in Cross Plains Cemetery. I did not see a Davis Gosnell listed in any of the cemetery books nor did I see him in the SC death index. I also checked the cemetery book for Henderson Co, NC as well. Does anyone know where he is buried or when he died? I have a few Sarah's listed in the SC death index that I need to check out. Was Sarah Moon a widow when she married Davis and if so who was her "Moon" husband? I would appreciate any help on this. I don't know but I'm trying to find out if there are family connections. James McDowell Richard "History of Greenville County, South Carolina" p.63 "Prior to 1824, when the Mansion House as built Captain David Long operated a resort hotel on the corner of Main and Washington Streets..." Since he was too young to fight in the Revolution, I wonder if he wasn't a captain in a local militia. As you may already know, the more affluent folks from the Low Country (coastal SC) would escape to the Up Country during the summers to try avoid the heat, humidity and disease. Greenville (then Pleasantburg) was built on a very pretty rise bordering the Reedy River. I do know that he was born in Massachusetts according to the census. I believe his tombstone at Springwood cemetery says he was born in East Sheffield, Mass in 1784. Are your Longs from the Carolinas? Hi Nancy, Thank you very much for all that information. I will give the probate court a call tomorrow. Do you think your David Long might be related to the same Long family? Roberta Summers ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Message: 1 Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2007 10:50:55 EDT From: KSum555@aol.com Subject: [SCGREENV] Thomas Long To: scgreenv@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <d4f.a969f95.33942f4f@aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Hi All, I am new to the list and just started researching in Greenville County and I need some help. Where would I write looking for a Probate in Greenville County? I am trying to research Thomas Long and I believe he died somewhere between 1810 & 1820. Am trying to prove he was the father of George Long who married Sarah Slover. Also were there any marriage banns for around 1810 in the County? Any help you can give me I would really appreciate. Thanks. Roberta Summers Hi Roberta, I thought I'd look up what I could find on the web and see if I may be some help to you. I've contacted the Greenville County Probate office in the past on multiple occasions for copies of wills and estate papers and I have to tell you that I've never met a nicer group of people. They are wonderful! I've also used the SC Dept of Archives and History and I think they are terrific as well, but they are understaffed and underfunded which means they charge more and take longer than going directly to the county probate court. When I contacted the Probate court for copies, I wrote to them and gave them my information including my email and phone number. One of the clerks returned my call and told me that they would look up the will and then call me back to tell me how much it would cost. When they received my check, they would mail the copies. Try calling the court directly to make sure that they follow the same procedure. Estate Division (864) 467-7170 if you are in-state Or Outside South Carolina 1-877-55-COURT If you decide to use the SC Dept of Archives and History, they have an on-line request form for copies. They will email you with cost. As I recall, you can call them with a credit card if you choose or you can mail them a check. The General Index to Probate Court shows a will filed for Thomas Long in Apt. 8, File 555 in 1824. I found this on Greenville County Historical Records posted by Greenville County Government Online http://greenvillecounty.org/historical_records/default.asp The specific page in the Estate Index is image 571 of 632. Hope this helps. By the way, the will is posted as well but the image is so poor due to the quality of the scanner when it was first scanned (about 30 years ago, I think) that I cannot read it. I have a small interest as my husband's great grandfather's first wife was the daughter of Capt. David Long in the mid 1800s. Hope this helps. Nancy Crayton
Greta, I would appreciate you keeping me in mind and I will do the same. You know that Elizabeth Long who married a Henderson might be George Long's sister. Am sure going to keep this all in mind. A couple of my Long boys married Moore girls but one was from Missouri and one was from Iowa. I don't have parents for them. Good luck with your research. Roberta Summers ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
At some point I will probably try to do some research on the Longs in Greenville, since I feel there is some strong association between them and the Moores, possibly one of kinship (perhaps Samuel Moore's wife was a Long). If I find anything of relevance, I will pass it along to you; likewise, if you figure out the Greenville Long family relations and especially if you see a Moore in among them, I would be very grateful if you would pass the information on to me. The name Henderson that you mention may come from Brasher Henderson, who married Elizabeth Long (his sister Sarah also married a Long). As I mentioned, I have not seen much research on the Longs, so right now they are a mystery. Good luck in your research, Greta Koehl ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Thanks Suzanne, You are right I could not view those records but I did not realize it was because I am on AOL. Will try and write the Archives and see what I can come up with. Roberta Summers ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
