    3. Hi Kelly -- the pleadings & judgments of the Court of Common Pleas are some of my favorite original records that we have here in the SC Room. Most of the cases are fiscal in nature -- business partnerships gone sour, or debts unpaid -- but you can find a fair number of assaults, thefts, etc. as well. They are not usually a great resource for genealogical information of the 'so-and-so begat so-and-so' variety, but there's often a mention of family connections in the course of elucidating the facts of a case. More importantly, in my opinion, the records are some of the few that we have that give a real sense of depth to an historical ancestor -- a glimpse of his or her way of life, moral character, and friends and associates. If you are lucky enough to have a family member who shows up in one of these records, you should definitely take a look at it! What is online at the county's historical records site are just the indexes -- each case is indexed separately by plaintiff and defendant. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. 3. Kelly Jane, I don't think I have seen anyone replying to you on list so here is what my LDS Research Outline for SC says (in part): Some major SC courts that kept records of genealogical value included the following: 1671-1790's Court of Chancery handled land & inheritance matters for the entire colony. (They were known as equity records later.) 1703-pres. Court of Common Pleas was a statewide court until 1790 when when each district established a separate court with jurisdiction over guardianshp & civil matters. 1769-pres. Circuit courts had district or countywide jurisdiction in criminal cases & some civil cases. 1769-1776 Court of General Sessions was a statewide court until 1790 when each district had jurisdiction over criminal cases. 1791-1900 Courts of equity had countywide jurisdiction over property matters. Prior to 1780 these records were all kept in Charleston, I think. Many of them have been microfilmed by the LDS, too. The problem I have encountered with that is that the SC Archives that allowed the filming stipulated that the films could only be used in Salt Lake City, which leaves folks like me (in Oregon) at the mercy of others. Sounds like it might be worth your effort to check out those records though. Good luck. I may too! Twenty-five counties have been completed and 21 are in their final stages. 1. [SCGREENV] VOICES OF MOUNTAIN KIN Vol. 2
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ncanders2 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.southcarolina.counties.greenville/6486/mb.ashx Message Board Post: VOICES OF OUR MOUNTAIN KIN, Volume 2 book is now open for pre-publication orders! The book is 180 pages, soft cover, with MORE stories, legends, memoirs, and photos of our mountain ancestors! It was compiled by the members of the Mountain Kin Yahoo group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MountainKin, as one way to attain their primary goal to trace and record our ancestors who lived and died in the foothills and mountains of the Blue Ridge, Balsams and the Great Smokies. Some of the titles and photos in the book are: "First National Bank of Wolf Mountain", "John Owen Kills a Bear", "Spencer Mull: Meat Clerk", and "Going Back Home." Many of the stories in the book are memories of "home" in the mountains. Chapter titles include "Life in the Mountains", "Family Histories and Tributes", and "Annals of the Past". Also included in the book are several of the Senior Profiles written by Dawn Jiles-McCall which have appeared in the Transylvania Times this year. The cover of Vol. 2, VOICES OF OUR MOUNTAIN KIN is a wonderful photo provided by Yvonne McCall Dickson of Easter "Hettie" McCall Owen. Her grandson, Ingamar McCall, is the driver of the car. This photo seemed to be a perfect representation of the main theme of the book which is explained so well in Linda Suddeth Casey's story, "Bringing History Home." Other photos include families and individuals with a cross-section of local surnames: Morgan, Galloway, McCall, McKinney, Barton, Cantrell, Chapman, Mason, Gravely, Hamlin, Anders, Owen, Chappell, Lowe, Holcombe and more! Vol. 2 will be selling for the same price as Vol. 1, $17.95. However, if you order BEFORE AUGUST 1, 2007, you can get it for $16 plus shipping. Shipping & handling is $3 for the first book, $1 for ea. additional book in the same order. Prepaid books will be available for pick up at the Lake Toxaway Community Center during MountainKin's Storytelling Event, open to the public to attend, 4 to 5:30 pm on Saturday, Aug. 4. Any books not picked up will be shipped immediately after that date. So, for about what you'd pay for two people to go to McDonald's, you can get a book that will give you a lifetime of enjoyment!!! As always, proceeds from the book will go to MountainKin projects which help preserve the past--the editors and writers are not making any personal profit! Their time and efforts are all donated and are a "labor of love." If you want to see more volumes of the VOICES books, please support the group by ordering today! To reserve your BOOKS, for yourself and as gifts, send payment by check made out to Linda Anders, address: 216 S. Broad St., PMB 13, Brevard, NC 28712. There are several different ways to search for different things so I'll show all the ones that come to mind with examples for each: The first again uses my web site to search for the surname "Pace": site:bluntrazor.com Pace The search returns 11 results and the search box on my site returns 12 so google does pretty good with that one (always remember that google can only return results for pages that it has indexed and there is no guarantee that it has indexed every single page on a web site.) 3. Family names are alphabetical within each Index. For example within Probate Court, you would go to the listings for "McCombs". Then under McCombs surname the listings are oldest to most recent. Google will not search these pages, as these are scanned images of the original Indexes. - Tim -----Original Message----- From: scgreenv-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:scgreenv-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jane Gillespie Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2007 8:48 PM To: scgreenv@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCGREENV] Old Deeds in Greenville Co. > In Greenville County you can check the indexes online at > www.greenvillecounty.org then go to departments; choose h and under h > historical documents. 3. I checked the cemetery survey books that I own and there is no Thomas Long listed. His will was recorded in Will Book B, p. 63 on 4 Oct 1824. His estate file is in Apt 8, file 555 Greenville County. This information came from the South Carolina Archives search page. If you don't have copies of the above, it might be useful to obtain them. The estate file often tells much more about the family than the will. On two occasions I have found the date of death of the widow in her late husband's estate file. 2. Hi Suzanne, I am searching for Thomas & Rachel Long. Thomas died around Oct 1824 and I have no idea when Rachel died, I believe around 1840 but not sure. If you could help me I would really appreciate it. It's possibly that they do not have a tombstone. Thanks for writing.
