I hope you are still reading the boards and you get this message. John Henry Cobb was the brother of my Great Grandfather Wade Hampton Cobb. I was only looking in Greenvile Co., because I was looking for John Henry's brother John Styles Cobb who I believe died in Greenville November 1968. This is the information I have regarding John Henry: John Henry was born 1/20/1867 and died 7/8/1954. He died in Stephens Co., Georgia He married Lula Hammett 8/15/1884. He was the son of Robert Cobb Jr. and Nancy Long. Robert Cobb Jr. and Nancy Long had the following children: Silas, Thomas Jefferson, James J., George Washington, John Henry, Samuel, Sarah Elizabeth (Betty) Cobb Burton, and Wade Hampton. My Mother was the Granddaughter of Wade Hampton and the daughter of his son Mish. My Great Aunt Betty, sister of Mish is still living as well. Both Mother and Aunt Betty are 84. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Gail

After reviewing old yearbooks they were able to positively identify the individual as William Henry Garrison who was in the Class of 1917 at Clemson Agricultural College. His academic efforts were in horticulture and he was from Anderson, SC. It appears that the photograph was mislabled with the wrong middle initial many years ago. I still haven't run into any of his family, but now that the name is corrected I hope that someone will have a match.

Surnames: Chapman, Chastain, Nelson, Adams, Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UeB.2ACI/3144.1 Message Board Post: I'm responding because you strike a chord with me in searching for your American Indian connections. I've been searching as well and I wish you success. First, in terms of records. Census records are a great resource but full of mistakes. I could fill pages with the errors in names, ages, even family connections - you really need every census record from your grandparents backwards to help you piece it all together. People often get confused or can be confusing when being interviewed. Try to use a tape recorder if at all possible so you can back over it later. Or talk to them more than once. I've found people misnaming their own grandparents. I've done it. My grandfather is William Albert and his father William Solomon - as I get older and I'm reciting the whole family line - I find I mis-speak sometimes. Back in the 19th century when naming children was often repetitive - you can have 3 Enoch Chapmans living in the same area - to differentiate they would call someone by something totally unrelated. The younger Enoch in this case was called "Tobe"! Ages can be completely baffling following a census. My gr gr grandfather Joshua Nelson is shown with an age difference in every census! It's never consistent! It varies by as much as 12 years. The only thing that helps is that there isn't a lot of Nelsons in the area and his wife is always listed as Louisa and his children's names stay constant. My point is - before you try to prove that Jesse Williams is your ancestor - gather as many documents from your grandparents backwards showing the link. Beyond census records - look for estate papers, land transactions are especially helpful because they often involve relatives. Obituaries are often helpful. Military records. Church records - baptisms, marriages, death notices. Cemetery records if available. But don't try to solely rely on the census. Good hunting! Nancy

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SMITH BLACKWELL Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UeB.2ACI/3145 Message Board Post: Hello all, Please, I hope someone can help! I would like any info on anyone or all who are buried at Brandon Cemetery, previosuly owned by the mill. The Historic restored Brandon Mill, Shoeless Joe, monuments, but what abt the Cemetery????? If only Shoeless Joe would have been buried at Brandon, or "anyone famous" buried there, there would be an option for Historical site. Otherwise you can just plant your garden there or whatever. More than "several" of my relatives are buried there, including my ancestors, Haywood SMITH and his wife Mary Ann BLACKWELL. With it being a mill cemetery, I can only imagine how many were buried there, surely not just our Smith relatives. Now "privately" owned with "No Trespassing" signs up, family members are not allowed to go on property, even to take a picture. If there is no existing list in a cemetery book, etc. then what? I have heard that my ancestor, Haywood Smith's tombstone had an emblem on it and they said that perhaps it could be Confederate. I have a copy of really old photo of the tombstone but it doesn't show the engravings well at all. I thought that maybe if listed in a book, maybe there would be a note about the emblem. I also would very much like to hear from anyone who has relatives or knows of anyone buried at Brandon Cemetery. Any info at all will be greatly appreciated, Pat Wells

Surnames: Cherokee Indian, Williams, Dern, Suggs, Howell, Bradford, Whaley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UeB.2ACI/3144 Message Board Post: My grandmother stated her mother was 1/2 Choctaw, Cherokee, or Arapahoe Indian. Can anyone help me with this problem: My grandmother filled out her mother's death certificate and you would believe the information is correct. However, she listed her father as William Williams and on the census records I found him listed as Jesse Williams. She listed her mother's mother as Mary Young and on the census I found her listed as Elizabeth A. Mary could have been her step mother. Annie married William T. Bradford and moved from Dodge City, Kansas to Beaumont, Texas. Here is what I have on Jesse: Jesse William Williams or William Jesse Williams: born in N.Carolina abt. 1831, father from Virginia. Married, in Tenn., Elizabeth A., born in Tenn, abt 1845. Parents of Elizabeth unkown, Parents of Jesse unknown. Children: John W. b. 1861, Illinois; William B., b. 1863, Kentucky or Tenn., married Minnie Patton, 21 Dec 1887, Dodge City, Kansas; Jesse Frank, b. 1864, Kentucky; Robert G., b. 1867, Tenn., d. in Carlton, Kansas; Annie (Mary Annie) b. 12 Aug, 1868, Tenn. or Kentucky, d. 29 Jun 1942, Lawton, Oklahoma, married William Tucker Bradford, 1 Nov., 1888, Dodge City,Kansas, divorced, married Perez, married Alonzo Whaley; Lettie Virginia, b 2 Feb 1870, Tenn, or Kentucky, died in Garden City, Kansas, married Suggs, Burrell, 1907 H. L. Dern; Laura E., b. 1872, married 9 Sept 1891, John Howell, Dodge City, Kansas, moved to California; Leona B. (Lenna, Lou), b. 1875, Kentucky, died possibly Arkansas, married a Kendall. Found Jesse Williams , wife Elizabeth Alford marriage on the Cherokee Blood Index. How do I verify that this is my Jesse. I have found Jesse Williams, 28, Elizabeth A. 16, Henry J. 7, and Idilla 4/12 in the 1860 Tenn. census. Elizabeth would have only been 9 years old when Henry was born. Are they all brothers and sisters, orpahns or was Henry J. a brother of Jesse or Elizabeth. In all of the other census, Kentucky and Kansas, Idilla is not listed.

This is our history in that small peice of land. Alice "Mamie" Kemp is buried there, she was an Elementary School teacher that graduated from the Reidville Women's College in the 1870s. Her father was killed in the Civil War. I have her Report cards from the College. Even though she was not related to our family, she lived with my mother's family for many years until her death. She died in her sleep in favorite rocking chair. My mother was named after her because her family had been friends of my mothers family for over a hundred years. Every thing she owned was willed to mother. If anyone is related to Mamie Kemp, please email me at Slimd49001@aol.com. I have a lot of documents and pictures on her that someone may want copies of.

    2. Rhoda, do you know anything of William Toney? I'm not kin, but he is mentioned in a history of First Baptist Church of Greenville as having set my ggg grandfather Samuel Gibson up on a plantation/farm , they must have needed ministers here. He is called in the book ,"Colonel William Tony". Would this be the same William Tony? This info was written by the biographer of Dr. William B. Johnson, a man who did much to lay the foundations for First Baptist of G'vlle, but left the area late in 1830. Thanks, Susan Finlay
